Subject: V8 TB on a V6
IP: Logged

Message:
So there has been talk around here lately about using the same year TB from a V8 on a V6. I have a '93 dakota sport V6 3.9L and would like more perfromance outta it (working on the whole money issue). Im thinking about going junkyard hoppin' and finding a V8 somewheres (same year, no older than a 94-95) and taking the TB from it.

Does it improve performance a lot? Or at least enough to notice? Will my current air filter fit it? or it is bigger (the V8 that is)?

Thanks....

oh yea, and would i need a new gasket for the TB?

Yes it improves performance 15 to 18 Rear Wheel
Horse power, very noticeable improvement.

I would get a new gasket its only a dollar or 2

Use the same air filter set up but I would
recomend at least a K&N drop in eliment they
flow better or a cold air system.

If you could find a 93 Dak V8 get the body and
cable and just bolt it on reset your computer and
enjoy the added performance.

You can also go right to chrysler and buy a new
cable for like $25

In most cases a V8 TB will give a noticable improvement on a 6. IMO, its the best mod per dollar short of nitrous.

Your air filter will work.

If you take your old TB off gently you might be able to save your old gasket but if your the type that believes in replacing everything to ensure the jobs done righjt than drop a few bucks on the gasket.

Good luck.

Go to http://www.car-part.com You can find one fairly cheap. I picked up a 95 V8 TB for $45 shipped with all sensors on it.

I read the other post you put up earlier, and i wasnt too sure what it was talking about....ill find one (TB that is) and take some photos of it...should it matter if its a performance aftermarket TB or just a stock V8 one? I was looking into getting stock V8/used from a junk yard...

thanx

I recently put a v8 throttlebody on a 1997 dak. before I started the mods, this thing couldn't even get out of it own way. I have added Bosch +4's, msd superconductor wire, accel high output coil, Napa brass cap and rotor, replaced the stock air box with, a crome intake tube and k&n low restriction air filter, replaced the factory muffler with a 70 series flowmaster. The v8 throttle body by far has been the biggest improvement in power I have noticed. I recently completed a trip from Seattle Wa. to Boise Id.
I averaged 18.5 mpg on trip running between 75 and 80 and bucking wind both ways. I ran the a/c quite a bit on this trip. WhenI pickep the TB it had all the sensors attached. I cleaned it according to instructions I found. This forum has been very helpful to me. Larry, I wish I had goodies you have. I think my wife would throw a fit if I sank 6grand in this truck, since I have a 92 dak 5.2 liter 4x4 with some of the same mod's as the 97.

Coming to this board reading and helping out when I can is
very relaxing and fun for me.

I have been building mopars for like 30 years now and have a
lot of Exp with them. My father Joe and brother Jerry started
our business in 1972 that is where the J&J came from.

I am pushing 50 now but I still like to have fun and building
and driving Hi Perf has been my whole life. I have been in
the shop since I was 15.

Now besides all the B Body restorations we are working on
the Mopar trucks just more fun added to our business.

I bought my first car when I was in high school a 1970 GTX
440 man what a nice car. The insurance back than was more
than the payments on the car being only 18.

Ya I know once in a while some smart a$$ kids come here and
get a little carried away with there posts, I just ignore them

This sounds like a mod I should do on my 2003 to help pull my camper.

Question tho... Service manager told me to never disconnect the battery, doing so would shut the PCM down and only a tow to the dealership ( to reset the PCM ) would get the truck started again. He said the PCM must have 8.3 volts min at all times to keep this from happening. How else would I get the PCM to reset ( after installing the V8 TB ) if I didnt disconnect the battery?

You don't have to reset it will learn the new body
even without a reset.

Bruce at F&B Flowmetrics does not even recomend
resetting after install anymore.

I have never heard of that before unless its
something new on 2003.

I have so many mods on my 6 that I don't reset
anymore it takes to long to learn all the mods.

I installed my F&B 48mm with out a reset and it
worked just fine.

Go ahead and drop a V8 or aftermarket throttle
body on it will be fine. I just put a fastman
on a 03 V6 for a customer and it worked out
great.

I would at least spring for a K&N drop in or
a cold air intake set up with a bigger body so
you get the full potential out of the mod.

Not sure if it's something new to 2003, he mentions it been like that for a couple years now. I found out after my wifes 2003 Neon check engine light kept coming on because there was a small leak in the gas filler tube. We thought it might have been the wife not tightening the cap good after a fill up and I asked if I couldnt just disconnect the battery to reset the check engine light if it happened again.

At the risk of sounding like a dumba$$. Does it matter what size V.8 were talking about here? Or just any you can find?I've got a 93 southern comfort custom I'm looking to spruce up abit and this sounds like a pretty easy h.p. gain.

The 5.2 318 or the 5.9 360 both use a TB with
50mm throttle plates with a torque step that
drops them to 48mm.

The V6 has a 42 44mm from the factory.

You just need to be sure of the year

92 to 95 have a EGR port

96 and up do not use EGR, if you interchange
the wrong year you will have idle problems.

You may also have to swap out the throttle cable.

o.k here I go again. I own 2 93's both lope like crazy on a cold crank for about 10 - 15 seconds, but when they come out of it there fine unless they get cold again. One has 126,000 and the other has 81,000 but you'd think they were the same truck. I had one put on a machine and they told me it was fine . well I think if it was it would'nt do it.Any I.ds.

Is it right that if you get a V8 TB of the same year(or same model like 92-96), then you dont need to replace the cable. I have a 92 and want the V8 TB and do not want to replace the cable.

If you go with a fastman or F&B they can install
the linkage you need.

If you go with a V8 sometimes you need to swap out
the cable depending on what you have.
