Subject: Broken exhaust studs!!!
IP: Logged

Message:
I just looked at my engine and saw that not only the
exhaust stud is broken on the passenger side but the
exhaust stud on the drivers side is broken off as well. The
driver's side is the worse it actually looks like it broke
inside the head. It's 2am here and I'll look in my workshop
manual later, but has anyone pulled the heads off of their
engine and how easy is it. To me it looks like besides
having to pull the intake manifold off I'm going to have
some problems with the firewall and the brake booster
getting in the way. Anyone have any advise besides taking
it to the dealership, because most likely I'm going to have
to take the heads to a shop and have them replace the
studs.

Well guys it has to be a Dakota defect! I have a 98 2wd 3.9L and never pulled anything but my own weight. Had a radiator hose leak and went to fix it. Looked down and there was my heat shield with the manifold bolts attached, Two of the bolts just broke off in the head. This was on the driver side closest to the transmission. I removed the manifold and no gasket was used.
Well now I've really gone and done it trying to get the bolts out and an ease out broke off in one of the holes. Well I'll have to get a new head now I guess!! I have the remaining two bolts holding it on now along with some hose clamps to help reduce the tention untill I can get it repaired. Its a loud ticking noise now that I removed it and put it back on. Can anyone tell me if it will hurt to drive it like this for awhile? I need to make a trip 480 miles each way in a couple of weeks. I blame this all on Dodge. I'm sorry but this is something that should have never broken. I say its poor design. Looking at the way the exhaust is made it needs more support under the truck. The long spand of exhaust pipe under the truck goes from the driver side to passenger side with no support. Is there a recall on this?? Anyone ever get Dodge to pay for this?? My warrenty is expired but this should be a lifetime warrenty in my opion. Its become very costly to me.

This is the only reason that I installed ceramic coated headers with exhaust manifold gaskets on my truck at 800 miles. I wanted to cut this problem off at the pass. I knew that Dodge didn't use gaskets on the mating surface between the heads and manifold, and as these parts heat up and cool down, they aren't allowed to "slide" on each other, as they are with a gasket installed. Plus, as JamesRF mentioned, the weight of the stock manifolds is a factor in stud breakage, too. Header bolts are shorter and stronger, and don't have the same stresses on them that the manifold studs do. Headers might also have some performance benefits, but it's hard to say on a lightly modded or stock engine. At least, they look way cooler than those old manifolds.
