that wasnt offered until like 2000 or 2001 models.

The band controls your second gear... you got a lot more wrong with your truck than a band. If your band breaks, you only loose second gear... trust me, i just fixed mine.

Damn I wished I still had warranty....it's a 97 with 96,000 miles on it.......well if the band makes you lose 2nd gear isn't that why I can't shift out of 1st?? But doesn't explain why reverse doesn't work I guess? I did drive 3 miles straight in reverse once, LOL. Don't ask why. Reverse have a band?

Yup, 1st/Reverse have a Band. Invest the $17 in a Chiltons for your year model, It will have pic's and step by step instructions on how to adjust them. Sounds like more than just a band. 96k your band SHOULDN't be broken, But then again I've seen worse things happen.

Is it the 42RE or the A500? 2WD or 4?

When my tranny died the shaft that connects the front half and the tail section broke off the mount and spun out-of-control in the tail section causing total disentigration in the Sprag bearing and all the clutch plates.

I'm running a 1996 42RE in a truck made for the A500. I don't have all the electric conectors and it causes shifting probs and Occasional OD engagement among other probs.

Where are you?

From what i know, the whole code is a "42RE 500A" It's been through a hell of alot of abuse and burnouts so I don't blame it for breaking down. I'm 21 now, I got it brand new in 97 and finally realizing the value of a vehicle. Little too late huh. It's a 2wd......and i'm in TX.

I have the same problem, but i just rebuilt my tranny. I only have first and reverse. is that because my bands are out of adjustment or something else is telling it to stay in first? I've had this thing apart 3 times now! Thanks for any help....this think is driving ME crazy!

any 1 know if a tranny from a 4.7 could be made to fit a 01 3.9 dak
i think the problems with these trucks is the gears are to widely spaced. because when it changes it drops the revs out the the poweband
bet the 5 speed guys dont have the same trouble
or maybe it can be rebuilt with better ratios then keep the 3.55 rear gear
