From my past experience, the double rollers still stretch a little and eventually make noise. What year do you have, because somewhere in the late 90's they became standard equipment. I think you will find that most people recommend them, you’re already there, and cost wise its cheap insurance.

I've been watching this topic come up for the past year. I thought I would give you a little insight to what I have found out. Seeing plenty of chain combo's come through my shop I've come to a conclusion I'm happy with.
The Factory TSB setup is without a doubt THE sure way to get rid of the chain problem. PEROID !!!!! EVERY chain stretches. It's a great quality repair. I can't count how many i've done and had ZERO problems. Yes it is more expensive than afermarket.
Make sure you get your inj. timing reset because it does make a big diference.
BTW: I put the tsb in my own 96 Dak. Before I bought it (used) it had a chain noise. I wanted the shop that I bought it from to put in the tsb.
before i bought it. They just put in a after market chain. Didn't bother me really as long as it was quiet. Yea right. After 60 day's it came back. I should have just done it myself to begin with. LOL I just didn't want to do another one that week..hehehe.
Spend the bucks.. and then forget it...

Mancini Racing has a fine tensioner for the Magnum engines. WWW.Manciniracing.com You might check them out before you purchase a factory tensioner.Good luck.

To be honest I have never mixed and matched the TSB. I do the repair as spec. To much of a liability to play around with a customer vehicle.
I will say the unit's guide width is pretty good but I have not bolted up a aftermarket chain and sprockets to see exactly where it would ride. Sorry.
But i will say if you find a tensioner that fits correctly, USE IT.
good luck

I am in the process of replacing my timing chain with a Cloyes double roller and installing the MOPAR tensioner. It was a pain getting the chain on with the tensioner bolted on but it does fit rather well. While it's apart I am putting in dual 16 inch electric fans since the thermal fan clutch is also going out. Plow Dak why does the fuel injection need to be re-set and is the dealer the only one who can do it?

Hey stealthloader
The reason for the inj. timing reset is because it's just like ign. timing. The dist. sets the inj timing in the 3.9. The ign. timing is run by computer and crank sensor. A sloppy chain retards the inj timing. IF YOU HAVE access to a scan tool that will read the inj sync then you can adj it. AS far as a DRB III scan tool from Chrysler your looking for a sync of "0" If the reading says a +( with a number afer it) you need to advance the dist. It's very sensitive. it will flux. a few numbers between + and -. Get a centered 0. It will help idle speed, response, etc.
hope it works for ya.
Happy motoring..
Mike

Howdy,

I am just a half-a**ed backyard mechanic and thought that I would fix the timing chain noise. I bought factory parts and have the TSB, but am having trouble with access. Did you all find it necessary to take the radiator out. I am at the point of wrstling with the water pump, it seems to be necessary to take the fan off to get the pump off. Just about ready to take a sawsall to the shroud.

I am po'ed at my dealer, I have a 95 and brought it in just before the 100k mile limit on the warranty. The dealer said it was normal noise, no mention of the TSB. Now (18K miles later) I find the TSB and the work would have been covered.

You shouldn’t have to remove the radiator. You need a fan clutch wrench set, as soon as I say this you will probably get a few shortcuts to this solution. Napa tools p/n SER 3472 has these tools, and they are available from other sources also. You need to loosen the large nut between the water pump and the fan clutch while holding the pump pulley still by the bolts (or with a spanner if you have the newer pump with the pulley welded to the shaft without bolts). Save that sawsall for poorly engineered front wheel drive repairs!

Hi Paul
You don't HAVE to take off the fan off the pump. But it does make it 100 times easier. I had one so stuck the wrenches wouldn't take it off. If you loosen the 4 bolts holding the fan to the clutch you can angle the shroud around the fan and slide it out. I just kept everything together while replacing the chain Mark green92 is correct in his procedure. It's the right way to do it. Try it the right way first...
Good luck

Thanks for the info about the fan, I have wrenches that will fit and I bought a Haynes book.

The question I have, before I start whacking things .... The Haynes book says the nut should be loosened by going counter-clockwise ... some posts on this site say it is a left-handed (reverse) thread. Do you know the scoop.

Thanks for your help.

I think it may be a perspective thing.I went to the garage to confirm the direction before posting. The nut is part of the fan clutch and turns counterclockwise to remove. The male threads are part of the water punp and can benefit from a little penetrating oil. On a final thought, support the fan after you turn the nut some so that it doesn't damage your radiator when it comes loose.

For those that have not seen it, here's an online article with pics to show you how to do a timing chain install in a ram with a 318/360. Not exaclty what you are doing, but you'll get the idea of what's involved.

Thanks for the help, the swap with the factory kt went well. I went for a new water pump as well, $75 - the old one did not leak, but ther was play in the shaft, so while everything was apart, the substitute made sense.
