 Subject: Shift Knob broke off!

Has anyone ever had this happen? The knob on my (auto) gear selector cracked a while ago, today it came off in my hand, but still connected by the O/D wires. DOH!

I have seen it several times. Only way I know of to repair it short of super glue is to replace the shifter in the column its self. Held in buy a roll pin, not that hard to replace. Just that bastard of a return spring in the column.

Hey Lesley
It happend to me too. Just make sure to
never let your o/d wires break or come
loose. That is what made my tranmission
slowly fall apart. Cause the system
was reading that i was pushing the button
in for ever. so make sure to take care of it.
I think the part is like $20 but its like $125 for the dealer to put it in. Any one know how to put these in?

Yikes! I just priced the lever at $88 (Canadian). That is without labour. Think I will check out the wreckers too.

Well, I picked up a really cool knob from Canadian Tire (or Crappy Tire to us Canuks) chrome, glass, and carbon fibre... of course it didn't fit and I had to return it. So.... I got some steel re-inforced epoxy putty. I'm just gonna jam it back on and put this goop on it. The all-new black-blob-shift-knob. Should be a trend-setter. Oh yeah - anyone remember that thread on fuel max - poo-poo max? Bernd? I figured out what the poo-poo max unit is made from. This black putty smells disgusting.

I am warning you. That same thing happend
to me, and i just fixed it my self. And it
ended up mesing up my tranny. But, if your
OD still can be turned on and off your in
good shape. If that ever happens to quit
qorking then you need to replace it.

All that happens when the 2 wires are pinned or grounded is that there is no overdrive. No dammage to the trans. I have seen it pinched when doing PDIs on new vehicles.

LOL! Yeah, they might have more luck selling it piece by piece. I think I'm gonna try the wreckers, that expoxy putty that is supposed to set "as hard as steel in minutes" is still soft.
