Subject: Decal Removal???
IP: Logged

Message:
I want to remove the decals from the side of my truck, i have a pinstripe and the Dakota and Sport Decals. How would I go about removing these without hurting my paint? I'm guessing a razor blade maybe? Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Dont jump!.....

Personally I would never go near my paint with a razor...and i learned that from experience. Its too easy to damage the paint with something like that. I think Autozone has some better stuff than goo gone or wd that will help with the adhesive. I havent taken the decals off the doors yet but I used a hair dryer and a thin plastic video rental card to slide under the decals on the tailgate and it didnt scratch the paint any. Some have mentioned fishing line or floss used like a saw. Planning on using that method on my doors...but first i have to fix the scratches from the razor where the V6 emblem was...damn opposable thumbs! ouch

razors: just say "no"

WalMart's auto paint and touch up section should have a kit - it comes with a clear decal removal chemical and a plastic tool to lift the edge of the decal. Follow the directions, keep the solution flowing, and once you have an edge up, pull the decal back against itself. It should lift right off. Polish and wax, and you're good to go with all your paint intact!
Good luck!

NO RAZOR BLADES!!!!!!

Sorry for yelling but..........

Just use a hair dryer to soften it up and pull gently, they come right off. A little goo-gone or even Meguires cleaner/wax will take care of the rest.

I took my decals off my dak a few years ago, looks
much better without those cheap red sticker. all black.

The hair dryer way sux its slow, pluss my wife was pissed. Use a heat gun, I went to a friends place and used his heat gun the decals almost fell
off, then your left with a white sticky goo. Use some goo off, it wont hurt the pant. Then wax and buff the spots, to blend the darker spots from the decals.

yeah don't use a razor blade that would be stupid.

OR, you can wait for a day where your truck has been sitting in the hott sun for a little while.....gentle use a credit card, NO RAZAR BLADES, to start you off, then peel them off by hand.....as everyone said, the goo will stay behind.....get some goo gone whip that crap off...and i'd suggest a good washing when you're done to make sure all the crap(the goo and the spray) is off!

Don't use a heat gun. They get way too hot and you can easily blister the paint if you are not carefull. I used a hair drier and it took about 15 minutes to remove all the SXT decals. I used a little goo gone to remove all the residue. Total job took 1/2 hour. You don't need to scrape the truck with anything. Put the goo gone on a towel and the glue comes right off. If you feel like you just have to scrape it off for some reason, you can buy plastic razor blades. You can get them at an autobody supple store.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!

Only listen to those who say use a hair dryer. That's how I did mine on my 98. It takes some time, but they'll peel off in one piece. Then, just buy Goo-B-Gone. It's amber colored. Just splash some on and let it sit about 2-3 minutes, then rub off. Reapply if needed ( I had to once more). This works GREAT. NEVER use a razor on paint...EVER.

First of all, how many years have you owned the truck? Anodization has probably set-in already if you've had it for over a few months. If so, the paint underneath the decals will not match the truck. Also, be careful with the magnum decals on the front fenders, some were attached using holes and some weren't (i think).

good luck

Why use a razor blade and take a chance of scratching your truck? Also Prizefytr, it is called oxidation and not anodization. Oxidation will happen on a darker color if it is a couple of years old. If that happens you can polish it out with some Meguirs #2 hi-tech cleaner and finish it up with Meguirs #9 hi-tech swirl remover. Then just put a coat of wax on there and you will be all set. The goo gone removes the wax also so you might want to rewax even if there is no oxidation.

newer cars dont have a color coat any more its basecoat - clearcoat so the only thing oxidation will affect is the clearcoat

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Don't listen to them. They ONLY safe way (and easiest) is too take your truck to the car wash. You know the manual side where you drop a quarter in for 4 minutes. Those little wands put out the POWER. They accidentally took off my stickers. It also takes the goo with it. Cheap and Easy.

Well, I took the ugly 4x4 stickers off the side of my truck using a hair drier & my fingernails. Pick an edge of the sticker off, then gently pull while applying heat. Worked fine, no residue.

One thing: if your truck isn't new, the paint under the stickers may look newer than the paint on the rest of the truck. My truck was brand new when I did this, so no problems.

the way that I took my decals off was with a pressure washer. It only took me about 10 minutes or so and then I got some goo b gone and took the glue off. Dont use on a truck that is chiping because it will take your paint off
