Subject: V8 TB or an F&B TB???
IP: Logged

Message:
Quick question as I am ready to purchase a TB.

If I bolt a TB on from a 5.2L, will I have as much improvement as if I were to go with the 46mm from F&B. What is the size of a 5.2L TB?

Basically, it would be great to hear from someone who has tried both options. What are the pros/cons of each setup? I am also assuming a 5.2L TB will bolt up to a 2002 3.9L. It looks like a much cheaper way to upgrade by going with the V8 TB, but I want to feel the best gain possible, and if I need to go the F&B route, I'll have to dish out the cash somehow.

Thanks!

The V8 TB is a good way to go 'cheaply'... but the 48mm F&B (not 46) is a direct swap bolt on, has better throttle response, and gives better overall performance (it was designed for the 3.9L intake diameter, and has the correct flow characteristics-- less possible bog or hesitation).

I sell both of these... The F&B comes with a 30 day return policy-- you don't like it, return for a full refund. The used V8 TBs have no warranty (though if someone had a problem, I could easily send a replacement).

If you have the money go with the F&B

I have tried all 3 here's how they stack up

V8 body good
V6 fastman better
48mm F&B best

the 48 F&B showed 4 more hp on the dyno and
10 foot pounds of torque at the rear wheels
over the V8 and 2 hp over fastman.

I agree with rtdkota and J and J auto's assessment. If money is a big thing go with V8 TB (I think you may need a V8 throttle cable). Fastman's is a nice V6 (I think) ported TB. You could get rid of you stock TB (core charge). F&B TB (48mm) was designed for your V6 but expensive (nice aluminum billet finish)(no core charge). I guess I had cash to burn when I got mine. Any TB would be a great improvement over the stock TB.

Thanks for all the replys. I think I will defintely go with the 48mm F&B. Cash is somewhat tight at the moment, but I should be able to order it within this month.

From what I hear the throttle body is a very noticeable upgrade. Currently I have the Stage II 7" Big Mouth filter intake from Intense Performance and a Dynomax 17748 muffler installed, so that should help boost the feel of the TB a bit more. Other mods to date are Autolites and a 180 T-stat.

Thanks again!

02SXT, I don't mean to promote crass commercialism, but I've got a 48mm F&B TB that I'd like to sell. I'd take $285, which would include ground shipping. The TB was only on the truck for about 4000 miles. I also had the Intense Stage 2 intake with a Dynomax 17748. I took the stuff off, as I was getting ready to sell the truck. I've also got a brand new, never used set of Crower 1.7 roller rockers. Post your email here, and I'll reply if you're interested.

I would get together with 02Sport and make a deal for both the
TB and 1.7's those are about the 2 best upgrades you can do to
a V6

And you already have the cold air intake you would
definitely notice the increase in HP and Torque

F&B 2 hp over Fastman?????

You must have one bad a$$ dyno! 2hp? Did you reset the computer after each TB swap? And if so, did you alow 50-150 miles for the computer to adjust itself to the new flow rates? And if so, was the air temp the same? How about the humidity? Barametric pressure?

2 hp....There is no way you can say that the 2 hp gain was because of the F&B TB and not just because of alot of other things, including just simply being variations of the same dyno.

If you're happy with $75 dollars per hp for the F&B over the Fastman, well I have some land you can look at!!

Darryl,

Look, we all what to make improvements on our Daks. Some prefer different ways. Inexpensive or expensive and appearence or just style.

What's to say if J and J Auto did the dyno test with all the variables favoring the FastMan TB versus F&B. At least he has some results that show improvement over the stocker.

Bottomline: Any TB change over the stock V6 TB would be a great improvement that the butt dyno would feel. Peace!!

Dyno test were done with a 200 mile learn on each
ASE Chip in a 70 degree shop 50% humidity and
a road speed simulator fan for intake and cooling.

Yes it is true there could have been some varibles
but I belive what I see and feel from each set up

The fastman and F&B are very close but the F&B has
better response over the entire rpm band. Its what
is on my truck now with a 92 mopar PCM that is
showing very good resaults over the ASE Chip.

The V8 body is an excellent upgrade for the money
