 Subject: power steering leak

I'm a newbie to my 91 Dak but i'm learning day by day. My problem is the power steering fluid is often low. I fill it up to the bottom of the two rungs like it says, and the next time I check it (a week or so later) its down again. There are no large spots on the ground under the truck, and since the engine bay has been sprayed with diesel oil, its hard to spot a leak there. Is there anywhere in particular that I should consider the source of this leak?

My dak is doing the same thing. there are two hoses (that i know of) on the P.S. pump. the bottom one is more likely to start leaking first. that would be my guess on your leak.

When I bought mine w/120k it was low on fluid and the salesman said it just needed to be filled. Sak-o-sh##. The chunk or whatever it is called that uses the fluid and power steering pump to turn the wheels(it runs from wheel to wheel) was bad. The covers were torn and it was a slow leak (about 2 days from full to empty). We got him to replace it free since it was supposedly fine "AS-IS". Anyway I checked it out to be relatively expensive, but at a parts house I have seen fluids that guarentee no steering leaks for under $10. Good luck.

Never ever under any circumstances use something to seal leaks like that, you'll seal more than just the leak.. TRUST ME.
OldMan, any number of things could be leaking. First step is CLEAN IT! There is a cheap o-ring set you can pick up at napa and replace your self by pulling the pump and replacing them. Next would be to check your hoses, clean them! Get some 409 or Purple Muscle or something. I had this happen on my 88 Dakota and I replaced the entire pump, only to find out it was o-rings. Then I ended up going through 3 pep-boys pumps till I got a good one. Just get the rings!

Good to know, i'll add it to my list of maintenance items. What is the significance of a squealing noise when i'm turning sharply at low speeds?

I have a 1995 v6 that has been leaking power steering fluid for a long time. It drips off the
axle on the drivers side, but recently I found that it would leak out nearly as fast as I put it
in. I drove for a few miles, and then parallel
parked and noticed blue smoke coming from the engine compartment. It turns out the pressure hose
sprung a leak at the pump, and had extremely minor
cracks, causing fluid to shoot out the sides onto
the exhaust manifold.
I replaced the hose, it cost $25 at Checker auto, and took an hour or so to install.
It seems there is still a leek, from the power steering gear(box)that originates from behind it...I can't really see.
The power steering gear is about $300 and the installation looks somewhat involved I am thinking
of hiring a pro to do the job but estimates are almost 1,000.
I wonder, should I mess with the installation and
do the tie rod disconnect, etc? to save $500?

Steering gear leak! My 94 dakota was leaking PS fluid down by the gear. Cleaned everything spotless, ran the truck while turning the wheels back and forth while checking for leaks. Found fluid leaking out of the top of the steering gear tower. There is a seal at the top around the steering shaft. Does anyone know if this is replaceable? It appears to be a pretty easy area to get to (2WD). Please let me know. Thanks!

Dodge Dakota 2006 4x4 extended cab...ok so I was driving our truck this afternoon, and as I was making a sharp turn out of the parking lot I heard a squeel and a grinding noise, and immediately noticed my power steering was out. I am going to have to replace the whole thing or could it be as simple as just a hose?

replace the whole thing and be sure to back flush the hoses in case the powersteering pump came apart and there is metal particles in there , doint that will save a lot on headache down the road

months, quart a week. Loooks
like its coming from a hose at the
bottom above the axle but also
from a nut at very bottom of
shaft. What's the shaft called and
the nut at the bottom?

I have a 2007 Dakota. Want to know if the steel line on the rack n pinion replaceable. It rusted a hole in the line. Dealer says no replacement line. Need to buy new rack n pinion. So is the line changeable?
