What should it cost to have a 44RE rebuilt due to a torque converter failure? Or should I just buy a good used on ? What does everyone think ? Is anybody selling a 44RE/46RE ?

Is the 44re an A500? I dont know... lol

If it's not, then this info is untrue, if it is however, your looking at anywhere from $2000-$2500 for most tranny shops...

Dakotas are a more expensive job, Transmissions are very hard to pull from these trucks, believe me, ive done a few, it's no fun, hehe

I just had mine replaced with a rebuild less than 2 weeks ago. The job normally ran 1800 but through a connection I got it done for 1300.

I tried to replace my A500 with tranny from same year (I thought) scrapped Dakota. turns out in 95-96 models they went to the A518 because the A500 is Junk. When I removed the tail section all the clutch pads, sprag bearing and shaft came out in a heap of small pieces! Beyond rebuild. I had to make a A500/A518 hybrid but then didn't have the proper wiring harness to run all the new elect components in the newer transmission. then the Input shaft for the A500 transfer case is 1/2" too long to fit on the A518 and had to break the 2 transfer cases apart to make a hybrid...... And then, the A518 is 4" shorter than the A500 and had to get a new driveshaft made ($194).
ENOURMOUS CAN O' WORMS! My recomendation... Part it out, Sell it or beg at the mercy of a tranny shop that will rebuild it for you. Try www.Phoenixhardparts.com but plan on spending $1800-$2200!

If you know anybody with Mopar tranny rebuild knowledge and the proper tools, O'reilly can order the soft rebuild kit for $160.

Oh yeah, after all that 2 months later I threw 3 rods out the bottom of the oil pan, Any recomendations on where I can find a new oil pan?

But then again what more can you expect from a '93 Dakota 4x4 with 217,000 miles to hell and back? (was all original b4 the tranny died)
