Subject: Fuel in my oil/Oil Leak 92'
IP: Logged

Message:
I am leaking oil in my 92' Dakota, when I check the oil it does not appear to be dropping. It smells of gas a little bit. It has also recently started to sputter a little. The bad boy has 160,000 miles on it and I want to keep it another 160,000. I probably will not do the work myself but I want to know and understand the problem before I take it to a mechanic.
Thanks
Buddy

you probably have a few bad piston rings if you have some bacic knowlage of how to do a compresion check i would suggest doing one if not ask a technician at a A.S.E certified shop he will most likley give you the same explanation.

does sound like piston ring blow by.
generally what happens is the rings no longer do their job. When the piston comes up on the combustion stroke the air/fuel mixture is able to go around the sides of the piston because the rings no longer give a secure compression. then
the fuel runs down the combustion chamber sidewall and mixes with the oil in the pan.
a low comprssion will indicate the compression ring is weak and you will eventually need to re-do the rings and generally over-bore the cylinder to fix it.
if your looking to upgrade to a v8 this is the time or reckoning. repair v6 or install v8?

<-- Had same problem. On the bottom of the plenum (intake assembly) there is a pan w/gasket, when this gasket fail the fuel being sprayed into the intake to be delivered to your cylinders drains into the top of your engine. when you look into the intake do you see oil? this also creates a vacuum and sucks oil into the bottom of your intake assembly. $19.95 for gasket kit @ O'Reilly's and 9/16" deep socket with long extension. (Check your bolt torque recomendations). Good luck!
