I've got a 98 dak 3.9 liter I've noticed reciently that at idle my oil pressure is at about 40psi then when i get going it goes up not sure the exact psi but it has to be some where around 80 can anyone tell me if that is normal and what the normal pressure is.

Thanks,
AAron

-Stole this from an old thread: (search for oil pressure)

"Your oil pump is driven off the crank (or cam, I'm not sure which on the Dakotas. My old chevy ran off the cam by means of the distributor shaft). When the engine is at idle, the internals and the pump turn slower, reducing the pressure. When you are giving it gas, the engine speeds up, as does the pump, and the pressure goes up. At cruising speed the engine RPM is about steady, as is the oil pumps pressure."

Also, what type of oil filter are you using? I used Fram for a long time until I realized there are much better quality filters available. Switched to a Napa Silver filter(which is actually a Wix filter) and noticed better pressure at idle.

thats normal... the higher rpms spin the oil pump faster and produce higher pressures. You are within the limits of oil pressure.

it is normal, my truck does it when i am pulling amy boat, and when i am just driving around town. the reason is that the oil pump is turned by the serpinteen belt. and as the motor reves up higher the oil pump pumps with more PSI.
