Subject: Rear axle for my '88 Dak?
IP: Logged

Message:
I need another rear axle for my '88 Dak 3.9. The stamping on my axle says 872355. I'm assuming that means it was manufactured in '87 for a 2 wheel drive and has 3:55 gears. I have several questions. Is this the infamously crappy 7.25" rear end and what other year Dak rear ends will be an exact fit? Of course I would like to put the 8.25 rear end in. Also the 3:55 gears seem to be about right. Anybody running the 3:90's in a 2 wheel drive V6 and how do you like them? One more thing. All of the salvage yard websites list 2 types of housings one with a round cover and one with a hexagon cover. Is one the 7.25 rear and the other the 8.25 and if so which is which?

The round cover axels supposedly were open diffs and the hexagon covers were limited slip diffs

no, all daks have the 8 1/4 rear axle, not the 7 1/4, if you want to step up, get an 8 3/4 out of a late 60s b-body (coronet, charger)

not all daks have an 8 1/4. Most gen3 v8 daks come with a 9 1/4 and older 4cyl models and some premag v6's came with a 7 1/4.

If this is any help, it's a 10 bolt w/the rubber fill plug. I believe that dodgeboy is right that some early Gen I Dak's have the 7.25 rear end. I would just like to know how to tell the difference so that I don't put another 7.25 in the truck. Will any Gen I, Gen II, Gen III rear end be an exact fit, with no modifications what so ever? If not, what model year is the cut off point?

Yeah, alot of the old 4 cyl got the 7.25in rear. However, all I have ever heard is that any V6 or 8 got the 8.25in rear. Anythng else is just to small.
The round vs hex centres make sense. Unfortunately I have the round and I dont have a limi slip. I have the open rear with 3.21s

Id got for a newer 9.25in if you can afford it. It should bolt up except for the lug difference. Us old daks have 5 lug, all new have 6 lugs.

Good Luck in you choice.

all 7.25s,8.25s and 9.25s that have a open gear[non posi] have the same problem, the bolt that holds the pin in breaks or gets loose causing the hole to egg shape or spits the pin.

i,ve owned 10, daks from 87-95 4x4s,v-6 and v-8
all have had 8.25 rears.

i know from 87-96 the rears are the same.just change the axles if you need a 5 bolt or 6.

the early dak 4 cyl had 7.25s not shore on later years.

r/t come with 9.25s

hope this helps.

Its all just or common knowledge man. I enjoy learning about all the dak stuff, not just my 1990 2wd V6. Its all just facts...

So what have you decided Butchnut? Whatcha gonna do?

Well I think I'll try to get another rear w/3.55 gears, especially if the consensus is that mine is a 8.25. I don't want a 6 lug rear though and then have to change the axles. One reason is, I think my rear end may be bent. I was jacking up the truck w/a floor jack under the rear end the other day and could not get both wheels to lift off the ground. Even with the jack about 4" off of center? If the housing is bent then in all probability at least one axle is either bent or damaged. BTW what model year did the Dak get 6 lugs?

I must say if your axles bent then you havent drove it in a while huh? I always jack up my dak with 2 floor jacks. Dont trust only 1.

Go look at local junkyards to find a used 8.25. Sounds like you best bet if your axle is bent.

No, I'm actually driving it now. Did you know that one of the biggest reasons for Bill Elliot's success on the super speedways in the mid to late 80's was that they purposely bent the rear end housing in a certain direction to help the car turn better? A strange but true fact.

I thought you were saying the axle shafts them selves were bent. Then that would cause an eliptical rotation that simply couldnt happen inside the confined axle housings small space.

donno what to tell ya man. All I can say is good luck. Bill Elliott is one of my more favored drivers. Of course my last name being Elliott has nothing to do with that! haha

I also want to change the rear axle, but on a 91 Dakota 2 wheel drive with a 3.9, I called a dealership and gave them the VIN of the truck and he told me it had a 9.25" rear end. This didn't sound right to me so I called another dealership and was told it was an 8.25", so for the heck of it I tried a third dealership and he told me that it had the 7.25" So now that I am totally confused - I do know that it is a 10 bolt with a kind of stop sign shape to the cover, it has 2 tags on it, one has 3.2 on it and the other has 2200 on it, again the dealerships were clueless to help. Doing a search at Salvage yards so far hasn't turned up a match, so my question is does anyone know what I do have witht the info I listed and (or) is there a rear-end that will swap with this one without any fabrication, also this has the ABS. Any help would sure be appreciated.
