I have 2000 dakota 3.9 with 66k. I noticed yesterday while driving on the highway that my RPM's would go up and then back without any addition pressure of the gas pedal. I was keeping the same speed and engine would rev higher (maybe 200-300 RPM's additional and back down). I recently cleaned the throttle body, IAC solenoid, replaced the tb gasket, and tuned up the truck. I was wondering if I may have messed up the IAC solenoid by cleaning it. My check light has not turned on yet... Anybody have some suggestions on what my problem(s) might be. Thanks

I to noticed the same thing and contacted a Dodge Mech. It's called an Overdrive lockout. It's like a half gear inbetween 3rd and overdrive. Aslight headwind, uphill will kick it in but it's nothing to worry about. Its normal.

I brought this truck brand new and I never remember this ever doing this in the past. I never heard of no extra gear between 3rd and 4th either. But keep em coming with any suggestions...

i know it's not the o/d kick out.mine will do it when the o/d is off.it's just at constant speed.had it happen at 40 mph.(i cruise with it off in the city).mine will bump exactly 100 rpm, sometimes once or sometimes three in a row.it seems more like a computer prob to me.very consistant.if it's a mechanical thing i'm sure it would do it at all diffrent times or at least bump up diffrent rpm's.dickie,i was wondering if yours is about the same?mine bumps real quik.if i have the subs pumping i can hardly feel it.it's very fast.good luck bro,i really have annoyed allot of people with this one.good ol mopar magic.

canadak, that is exactly what mine does except I see more of a rpm boost maybe 200 - 300 rpm's, it is definety noticable to me now, but I don't ever remember the truck doing this until about a week ago. Very short bursts maybe every 5 minutes if I keep it steady, I don't have cruise control or I bet this truck would boost rpm's every 1 minute. It does seems like a computer problem or sensor problem to me too... Thats kinda why I was thinking it was the IAC solenoid that I had cleaned recently is now taking effect. Can someone tell me what happens when this solenoid goes bad?

hummm...
Mine has been doing this for along time (at least 8 months). After two trips to the dealer, and they do their good ol' test drive (around the block?), they say nothings wrong?
Anyways, mine does it with OD on or off. on flat surface, I hardly feel it but, when climbing slight incline and the truck reaches the top of the hill just starting to decline, I really feel the RPM shift, the truck actually bumps. It's pretty scary when your 3 hours from any town.
The RPM shoft is about 200 - 400 RPM on mine.

I have noticed the same surging rpm issues with my '98 3.9. So far Ive only noticed it at cruising speed (70-75) on the interstate. Also noticed it happens more on rough roads. Cleaned the TPS today with no noticable difference yet. There are quite a few other posts on this same thing, just search for 'rpm' or 'rpm surge'. Most suggestions point towards the TB sensors...

Also having problems with an inconsistent idle and the truck wanting to stall when warmed and placed into park...rpm's drop to around 500 and the truck seems to stumble.

Guys...I know this sounds stupid, but bear with me till you hear me out....What octain fuel are you running? My Dak absolutely HATES GOOD GAS!!!! every time I put 89 or higher octain fuel in my truck, I end up with all kinds of stupid drivability problems! Stalls , surges , hard start, etc. I run that tank out and go back to 87 octain fuel....and it straightens back up. Being an EX- dealer teck , I'm sure its the computor "learn mode" it has to go through. my explanation to my customers was- cars are like kids...sometimes they don't like what you feed them. one other thing to try , disconect the battery and try the "reset" . disconecting the battery makes the ecm go back to default parameters on the learn mode. might help might not but worth a shot. Hope this helps, Bill
