Subject: 97 v6 timing setting after rebuild
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok, this is my first Dodge, and I really like the truck. I got it with a blown motor, and I did a .030 over bore with all the standard rebuilds. Its all clean and back in the truck now. I fired it up, runs good, but had a hard time getting it started. I set the initial timing by locating TDC, and then just starting #1 for the plug wires where the rotor button was pointed(backyard mechanic style). After some reading, I think this is messing up things cause of the crank/cam sensor. I tried firing it back up, and now I get no spark, and no power at the coil. Does this distributor have to be put back in specific for all this to work, and is this the cause of having no spark? Thanks everyone.

Ill share my recent experience with you and you decide. I had my 92 V6 rebuilt after I destroyed it in a flood. 240K miles. I took it to a shop for the rebuild. They spent 6 months AFTER recieving the rebuilt motor trying to get it to run correctly. It would run, but like it was a 4-5 cylinder. At the seventh month I asked to pick up to truck and drive it over the week end. Their thinking at the time was to just let it sit and run all day hoping whatever bug it had would work itself out. I picked up the truck at 6 p.m. By 10 p.m. that night, I had the truck running smoothly. For some reason, Im guessing, they must have setup on #2 TDC (passenger side front cylinder). When I wired the ditributor correctly, the truck would not even start. I eventually set it to TDC #1, restabbed the distributor and it fired right up. I took it back to them and they did some procedure from alldata.com that set it exactly on 0. Had something to do with the OHM's reading. The Hall Effect plate was good, but you may want to check yours. Thats all I got.
