Hi, A while back I put a built 318 in my 95 dak and no longer need my 3.9L I also have the wiring harness, injectors and PCM if you're interested. The engine ran quite well and has about 60,000 miles on it. The water pump pulley was marred when I pulled the engine out and needs to be replaced. otherwise it seems to be in good shape.

all reasonable offers will be considered

Steven, I have the PCM and wiring harness for the engine also. It is missing the EGR valve, and the injectors, but I have the oem injectors from my 318 that you can have. I believe they are the same part.

Gen II geoff, is it a lot more difficult putting the 318 in place of the 3.9? Im thinking of doing this one day, since I hear they bolt up in the same holes, mounts, and engine locale. Thanks.

The swap isn't very difficult so long as you know where all of the wires are supposed to go.

I needed a different flywheel, pcm, harness, injectors, fuel rail, throttle body, throttle cable, cooling fans and dipsticks.

The swap took me a week to do including waiting a few days for the flex-plate to come in. I didn't know that the 318 needed a different one, but when I discovered that I was getting six sparks per revolution I knew what was up right away. The crank sensor wasn't picking up the right signal.

If I had to do it over again I would have built up a supercharged 3.9L instead of swapping in the 318. My 42-RH blew within the first few weeks while my motor wasn't even broken in yet. I ended up dropping about 1500 on a built 46rh to handle the torque.

I thought it was fun swapping out the motor, but I had three friends 'helping' me put it in and I had to take the week off of work and school to do it.

Hope this helps
Geoff

Argggh - your tranny blew - were you running it
hard? Lots of people have told me that mine
should hold up under normal use. I can't
afford a tranny upgrade yet. I'm in no hurry to
get the swap done though, the rebuild is going
to take a while. Maybe I will just start
budgeting for a 46.

I wasn't hammering on it at all. My engine never saw 3000 rpms for the first 2500 miles. I had also had the trans rebuilt a year or so prior to putting in the 318.

Putting the engine in wasn't that big of a deal, my only concern is that with the money I spend rebuilding my engine ('bout 3 grand) I could have made my v-6 more powerful than the v-8. Don't get me wrong I love the 8 but it would have been MUCH cheaper to build another six.

Yeah, it sure isn't cheap. All the little things add up too.
I think I have the 42RE tranny - is there any difference between mine and yours seeing as you are a gen II and I'm a gen III?

Lesley, the RE transmissions are electronically controled and the RH in mine is hydraulically controlled. The 42 RE in yours is about the same as the 42 RH I had. It won't handle much more power. The 44 R's use the same housing but beefier clutches (I believe.) The 46 I have now is alot bigger than the others. It is much more durable which is why chrysler puts it behind the 360's.

I still get a burning smell from this trans which leads me to question the abilities of the shop that built it for me, but it is ALOT better than the 42-RH I had before. It spins the tires into 2nd real nicely :-)

Thanks Geoff. It's funny - I have had such a
broad range of advice from people - some say
this tranny will be just fine if I don't drive the
crap out of it , others say no way. My project is
delayed a bit - I had to send the cam back
because it was too big, now the valve springs
won't work. :( Oh well, definitely a learning
experience.

I've heard both sides of the transmission story, I just happen to be one of the unfortunate ones. However, I feel that it would be good to prepare yourself for the event that your trans might fail and when it does it will be in the most inopportune time.

frankcd, I still have the engine but I'm not in a real hurry to sell it. What do you think its worth? I have the PCM, wiring harness (95 dak a/t), engine, tb, intake, exhaust manifolds, and fuel rail still available. The engine ran quite well but I haven't pulled it apart.
