Hi, im cluesless when it comes to car stuff.

I want to know what kind of things i can do to my truck to make it better.

i got a v6 3.9 4x4.

I have an airaide intake on it already.
I dont have alot of money. so cheap suggestions would be great. (100-200)?

I hear things like flomaster, throttle body, headers. I dont know how to put these things on, nor what ones to get. Ha, Any advisement would be great.

Most work would have to be done by a shop for me, i wouldnt know how to tear an engine apart.

Thanks!
Dave.

I was looking at some of the stuff they have, looks great! however i am still unsure of what i could do with ease...

The iat says it adds like 10 RWHP (? raw horsepower?) to the motor. Is this easy to install?

I dont know what i should start with.
Please advise.
Thanks

David.

I have a few more questions for you!! Is your truck an automatic or 5-speed? Consider a Shift kit or Short throw shifter. I have heard that the IAT adjuster is a great mod on the V6's, I haven't done it so I don't know how easy it is, but I head that is basically just splicing in wires. The hp rating is probably to the wheels!! Let me know if I can be of any help!!

The mods I would do first is:
(no particular order)

Gibson catback
ASP underdrive crankshaft pulley
JBA Headers
High-Flow cat from speedtweeks
Throttle body from speedtweeks

Ok, i didnt know exactly what you needed to know...

I have a 3.8 v6 4 speed automatic. It is 4x4 with 3.92 gears. trailer tow group.

whats a crankshaft pulley?
Is that somehting i can do?

As for the others, i will starting making some calls. i cant do car stuff, im no mechanic...
so hopfuly its not to expensive to do. i hear that i can get a flomaster 50 for exahust off soemwhere for like 90 bucks, add that to a new CAT (as in catalitic converter right) maybee that would help with the power...

Is a throttle body hard to change? on their site, they talk about a v6-v8 conversion. Is that something hard to do? would i be better to buy a bigger v6 one?

Thanks!
Dave.

It speeds up the crank to produce more bottom end power quicker.

I wouldn't attempt it if your not very mechanical!!

Get the bigger V6 throttle body!!

I wouldn't get a flowmaster muffler, they just don't sound right on our trucks. I have heard 2 different ones that give it the nicest sound and they are the Gibson & Magnaflow cat-backs.

So a cat back is a muffler?
Or is it a replacement cadalidic converter?

BTW - Thanks for being patient with me!

I read somewhere about not going bigger than a 2.5" opening. You agree with this?

Thx again!

A cat-back is the pipe from behind the cat to the back of the tip. I suggest the 2.5" Gibson Swept side cat-back. It sounds the best in my opinion!!
You are still going to have to get the High-flow 2.5" High flow cat from speedtweaks. Then all you will need is headers and your exhaust will be finished. Don't go any bigger than 2.5" otherwise you will lose backpressure and too much bottom end torque. Don't worry about the questions that is what I am here for!!

10 rwhp is rear wheel horse power, wich means probably 12-14 at the crank. i'm not exactly the most mechanically inclined guy either and i did the crank pulley myself. if you get up the nerve to try it (it's a good deal for $67 for the set of two pullies) then just drop me an email for some info. listen to 98SPRTV6 on the exhaust, he's right on there. as for the throttle body, if you're keeping within a budget you might wanna go with the V8 throttle body. you can pick up a used one for like $70 (as opposed to bigger v6 for $250 w/ core exchange to $400 for billet). this might be a little more difficult to do than a new v6 TB because you need to put in a v8 throttle cable and bracket ($22 from dealer) although it's a pretty self explanatory install. like i said, you need any help just post here or drop me an email: the80s_sucked@hotmail.com

Sorry, late night ramblings i guess...

Went to gibsons home page. On there, there was a product finder. For a 4x4 club cab. It said that I needed to take off the spare tire to use their product.

Did you need to remove your tire (Do they mean permanently? Do they mean just for install?).

My uncle/not uncle can probably help me with the crankshaft pulley and throttle bodies...

For installation, Gibsons website said you could do it yourself... I'm a thick person (fat) and can shimmy under cars as easily as some people. Do you know if the installation is hard to do by yourself (it makes it seem like it on the website).

You guys rule -> Well, that's self-explanatory. :)

I think you just need to take the tire down just for the install, you can probably put it back when you are finished!! They only want you to take it down because it is in the way!!

I was looking at the IAT controller that they have. It sounds like it is something for a person who does racing with their truck. I don't think it's for me, but maybe I am misunderstanding its usefulness... I live in New Hampshire. It's often cold. Heh. In the summers, its maybe 80's at the hottest point. That is when the IAT controller would be good right? But, from the sounds of it is something that would have to be constantly adjusted right? So, perhaps this is not the kind of tweak that I am looking for. Is there anyone that has used this, who might be able to answer?

98SPRTV6, I realize you said you haven't used these so, thanks for all the other info again. I will have to check around and find a price for the Gibson Cat-Back.

This font is a lot nicer, Heh.

The Stage II Jet Chip Module runs about $214 from truckperformance.com! I have heard that the Stage II is the only one that works well with our trucks, but you have to run premium gas in every tank. The IAT Adjuster is a better bang for the buck. Again ask bernd if the IAT works with the Jet Chip Module. He would know better than anyone!!

I've gotten great information from you, and thanks, yet again...

I will have to play around with my truck. I think i am going to try and change out my trottle body myself. I dunno, we will see what happens. I know that Speadtweaks sells the flomaster V6. Why are these so special? Just teh 46mm Bore?

Thanks

Hey, I have the Flowmaster 50 series and it sounds great. Bernd has tried numerous exhausts and come back to Flowmaster. The stock V8 TB helps high end power, but kills low end torque. It's not ported, therefore it's not very efficient as far as air flow. The ported V6 (Fastman) is $250. It is a reworked, used TB. Good quality, but still used. The Flowmetrics 48mm TB, is the best choice. It's new, same size as V8 but ported. The exhaust and TB should be your next 2 major mods. As far as cheap ones, a set of autolite 3923 spark plugs, borg warner brass distributor cap and rotor and some good plug wires is a start. After you get done with your muffler, cat, headers, ignition and TB, you should have spent $1000 and $1600 depending on combos. The IAT is supposed to be a good upgrade. But only good for hot days.

I have the Deltaflow 40 series and nothing but compliments from people. That is usually before I tell them it's a v6, :0 Ed Haltman and Chris Oertell from the DML (Dakota Mailing List) have heard my exhaust. Chris is now changing his Gibson (sound too ricey IMO) to what I have. Ed said it was the best sounding v6 he has ever heard. Ed also said it was louder than his 4.7 with the Gibson exhaust (not by too much IMO). A few guys from the DTOA (Dodge Truck Owners Association) gave me props for its deep rumble.

Get the ASP Crank pulley (about $70)which is very easy to install. Took me about 20 mins and I'm not the greatest mechanic. This install is much easier if the fan and shroud are removed. Once the fan is removed, might as well get the electric fan ($180) in there. A little harder to install because of wiring (bolting it no is easy). I recommend the Black Magic Flex-a-light fan. Temps can be adjusted from 180-240. Add a 180 T-stat for $10 or so, which is also not difficult to install. Total = $260 but well worth it. Save your pennies and get the F&B TB($450).

All right guys thanks for the more information... I will have to sit down and start making my xmass list early... I dont think anyone will give me what i want though, unless its hard cash. :) Of course, i have to give myself an xmass gift ya know. i will look around and see what i can get put in around here. When you say you get "nothing but complaints from people", do you mean over the noise that the truck produces? I don't want to be waking the neighbors up, i live in a condo, and there is an association with rules out the ying yang.

Thanks

Its compliments, not complaints. The sound does wake my parents and we have double pane windows in the house. You might want to get the 50 series if your concerned about the nieghbors. Associations suck, too many retarded rules.
