Subject: Gears - Please Explain

Ok, I have posted a few times now, and can't seem to get a comlete answer. I have installed a 3" body lift, and Pro-Comp 305 70R16s on my 97 Dak. 3.9L 4x4. I have changed nothing with the gears. Do I need to? I assume I have the stock 3.55s? I haven't cranked my torsion bars yet, and I get some rub on the inside fender well, but that's it. Some people have said I need to get a suspension lift as well, others say no. So, I guess this is a 2 part question. Do I need more lift to run those tires, and do I need to change the gears also? I did have some problems getting up to higher speeds on the highway. I don't do much off-roading, none really. My odometer and speedometer are off as well. What else do I need to do?

when you run larger tires your speedometer will be off because it is measured by tire spin. so larger tires turn less which mean it will read slower. theres a way to fix it but my mind is blank right now.......... as for the gears. they will help you get back some of the low end that you lost. need bigger gears for bigger tires to make it act the same. i'd say go with the 4.56 if you have an auto.the suspension lift would help performance but its not really necessary but you would get more lift....... hope this helps some

Thanks. Is it absolutely necessary to change gears?

ifyou want it to preform well then yes. otherwise it'll feel sluggish. gear will give you a huge difference. it'll hurt gas mileage a bit but its worth it. i have a 4x2 with R/T rims on it and i went from 3.21 to 3.92 and man let me tell you there is a huge difference. just remember you gotta replace both sets of gears. but yeah its worth it to do. probly no more than 300 for each set of gears then probly around 300-400 for an install depending on where you go. i got mine done for under 200.good luck

Greg
