It seems as though I have read on this forum that dakotas have an ongoing problem for inexplicable shutoff\on. I have the same problem. I've also noticed it happens when on a day over 60 degrees and truck has been running for at least 30 minutes and is hot. It cuts off like if I turned off fuel pump. Sometimes for a second or sometimes 10 seconds. If I shut it off, go in the store for 10 minutes, it won't start for 5 minutes. It also shuts off when I'm stuck in traffic.

Of course it won't do it at all for the mechanic and I hear,"runs fine". Mechanic tried the crank sensor, didn't work. For me is another story, expecially in a traffic jam. Not fun pushing out of the way to wait 5-15 minutes to let truck cool. Usually starts after rest. Confusion is killing me.

I heard EGR, computer ground, computer, distributer wire, among others.

This might seem repetetive, but:
1. has Dodge ever addressed this?
2. did any of these ideas work for anyone?

I have an '89 v6. The Haynes is no help. Thank you for any answers that are provided.

I have 89 with the v6 as well. Mine did it, distributer wire was my problem. but check your codes. ignition starting in off- on- off- on- off- on and then the check engine light blinks, see where that leads you.

try the coil[it maybe over heating]they work fine cool, over heat stop working, cool work fine again.

also back in the mid 70s mopar had a similar problem with the lean burn system doing the same thing.

it turned out to be a wire that was soilder inside the computer that would lose its connection
when it got hot[hair dyer would fix this]let it cool 1/2-1hr car would start up and run fine[some time it would be weeks before it did it again]
took them a yr or 2 to find this problem.

hope this helps.

Check the distributor. I had the same problem and the dealer couldn't find it until they had to push the truck in the service bay. It was a long time ago but I'm pretty sure it was the pick up in the distributor.

I had a '87 Firebird that did this exact same thing. It wound up being the ECM (Electronic Control Module) inside the distributer. Not sure if your Dak has this or not but, it was only about $20.00 and very easy to install.

Good Luck,
daveo.

Here's the kicker:

Truck has been running fine for 3 days. All over 70 degrees. Just when you think you know what's going on?!?!

I appreciate all the advice. I'll try all the cheap ones for the hell of it.

my perticular problem is more frequently the sympton in which it wont start for 10- 15- 30 minutes , seems to be weather related or temperature of engine related. The warmer out it is the longer i seem to have to wait (for what its worth!?) .Somtimes it wont happen for a day or so , but mostly its pretty regular.

Our '88 Dakota (3.9L) again just started up its "intermittent failure to start" problem after 9 perfect months with no such problem. I've noticed that its related to:
1) warm engine not starting
2) as the engine is being cranked the fuel injectors are not spraying fuel into the throttle body (mine has the single point injection system)
3) spraying starting fluid into the throttle body will get the engine to fire up but only briefly until the starting ether shot runs out.
4) there's no warning before it happens

We put in a can of good quality injector cleaner last time and the problem did not occur for about 9 months. I wonder if the injector cleaner had anything to do with the solution before. Not sure. But I'm going to give it another try.

My other tentative theory is vapor lock. But since the fuel lines are under pressure how could vapor lock occur - unless the fuel pump is old (it is) and does not put the fuel under enough psi?

Hope this helps.
P.S. If you find out please let me know at kalnin@early.com, if you will.
