Subject: 3.9 cooling question

I have a 97 3.9 with 210k on the clock. Has been a great truck, changed only minor parts. Have a new crate 3.9 that I will put in when this one gives up the ghost...but this is a good experiment to see how long will our stuff last?

related repairs:

replaced fan clutch (1 day); waterpump (6mo.), upper/lower hoses/thermostat (1 year), flushed coolant (6 mo.)

situation:

when going uphill the gauge moves from center line, to splitting the difference between middle line and highest line on acceptable scale. (I assume acceptable as there are 3 lines in the center of the gauge, and two more lines, one far left that is where the needle rests when off, and all the way right, with a red line.) I am not talking about that red line, but the last line of the three line center of the gauge---if that makes sense.

after peaking at the top of the hill and then descending, it takes about 5 miles for the gauge to again read at center. When the truck was new, I ran it to Vegas a lot. I noticed that NO MATTER how hot it got outside, etc. the needle would run just to the left of center. The fan also used to make an awful roar when the needle went beyond center---I am assuming the fan clutch, which I didn't hear anymore recently--so I changed the clutch.

new fan clutch---problem remains. Any suggestions???----other than putting in the new motor:)

on ebay $ 1k plus 250 truck shipping from Utah to CA. There is a co. that uses the dakotas as coal mine vehicles. They get them by rail, drive them into a warehouse, hack off the tops and pull out the motors to replace with diesel motors. The gas motors are put in a crate and sold. I got so lucky, as I think I was the first customer. He gave me both airbags from a 2001, also fuel tank sender, instrument panel, computer controls....and the motor is complete---from the negative ground cable to the motormounts, to the airhat---. Only need a new a/c compressor as I can't bear to put in a 3mi engine with a 215k ac compressor---even came with radiator hoses----what a deal!!!
