I got smoked by a 99 Chevy Caviler.. 4 cylinder automatic... i have a 3.9L v6 dakota. I blame it purely on my lack of skill on driving a manual, my start was horrid, i cant start quickly.. what are some tips?

If you don't have a tach, get one. Find the clutch pedel position where the cultch just starts to engage, start just below that position. Start at idle ,then increase starting rpm until you have initial wheel spin, then lower the start rpm. Try coordinating gas and clutch so you had full clutch and full gas in about 2 seconds. As you practice it will become a relex. I assume you are using 4wd-high.

It takes time and practice. How long have you been driving a manual? I like to launch at about 3000 rpm, i fully let off the clutch at 3000 rpm then quickly give it gas. If you coordinate it just right the tires will chirp and you will take off. If i get on the gas to quick i smoke the tires and the truck doesn't move. I let up on the gas a bit shifting into second otherwise i smoke the tires and the truck wants to do donuts, i powershift through the rest of the gears. When you shift and push the clutch in and out you want to be nice and smooth, of you slam it around you will just mess up the truck.

My suggestion is to find the steepest hill you can find and practice starting the truck on that hill. Yes you will burn the clutch several times before you learn how to start the truck, but i can tell you for certain that you will be able to launch the truck hard on the flat and wont worry when senior jack ass stops 2" from your bumper on a hill.

Good Luck
