Ive got a 98 Dak, 4x4, 3.9l, 5 speed, club cab.

ive got a strange (but subtle) squeel/whine coming from the front end (underneath) when the Truck is hot (ie driven for 15 minutes or more).

does not happen when cold.

its especially noticeable when you decelerate (between 10km/hr and 1km/hr) and somewhat on accelaration (1km - 10km/hr)

It does not happen when the truck is revved in neutral.
the squeel is similar to a belt noise, but doesnt match engine speed, nor wheel speed.

could it be a drive shaft (front transaxle) noise ?

any help is appreciated

Dont know, not tried it in 4 wheel, i really only notice it most when i decelerate from normal highway speed down to under 10K etc.

4WD high i could try i Guess.

any thoughts on what it may be either way ?

Any noise that increases or decreases with engine rpm.

Possible causes:

Low power steering fluid: Check and fill power steering fluid.

The alternator bearings are bad: Replace alternator.

A bad water pump: Replace water pump.

A bad power steering pump: Replace power steering pump.

A bad air conditioning compressor: Replace air conditioning compressor. (Not a DIY job)
