Looking for any info I can get about replacing the stock orange/red coolant in my 02 dak with normal green stuff. What is in the orange/red coolent that makes it so special?

I don't want to mix them, I just want to replace it. I have a coolant recycler at work that has the green in it and if I can use the green in my truck I can add an atachment to my truck and flush my engin every service. I have heard some bad things about replacing the orange/red with the green and just want to know if these are just old wives tales or not.

No, you should not replace the orange coolant with the green coolant. I also have an '02 Dakota, and the owner's manual expressly states that the improper coolant can damage the radiator and other cooling system components. There apparently are certain additives in the orange coolant that make it necessary and incompatible with the green stuff. I wouldn't do it.

Dont do it the chemical make up of the two antifreezes is diffrent, and if they mix they like to form a really cool sludge like material inside you cooling system. The x-life (orange) is a better bet anyway cause you dont have to change it for at least five years. If you do go ahead and do this, make sure you flush the engine really, really well to make sure you get all the old anti-freeze out. This includes the rad and block.

the metallic compostion of the radiators has been changed in the past few years by a number of car companies[ more aluminum],and the newer red/orange coolant is a match for the radiators-- if you can clean it all out , then you can switch, BUT it will mean a shorter life for your cooling components and radiator.

I agree, the newer orange/red/pink/blue coolants have special additives and are silicate free. I would keep the stuff the factory recommends and just do a drain and refill on the radiator every 30K miles.

Thx alot, that was just the information I was looking for. I'm not going to bother with dooing the switch, it just sounds to risky for the small convience I'm going to get out of it.

you CAN mix green coolant with the orange coolant except for the DEXCOOL brand. In other words, if you mix Prestone brand orange with green you're okay... but not DEXCOOL... i have done so and know it works.

if you have orange, keep it, its much better.
