Question: Even though my O2 sensors are not setting off any codes, should I still replace them every 60K to 70K?

How is your MPG ?

O2 Sensor Replacement:

The O2 sensor(s) on your vehicle are designed to sense Oxygen in the exhaust stream. When they sense too much "air", they richen up the mixture and when the don't sense enough "air", they lean out the fuel mixture. Under normal conditions, they should last you 60-80K miles. However, we all drive in varying traffic conditions so the life of the O2 sensor is diminished. We recommend that you change the O2 sensor(s) every 60K miles to keep your engine running in optimal condition. (This includes the regular service intervals and tune-up schedules.)

Dan,
Thanks for the info. One more question: which O2 sensor is most likely to need replacing the worst, the pre-cat or post-cat sensor?

The one before the cat has the most effect on enging performance, but you should replace both at the same time. Most of us dont have the kind of ducks to dish out buying these expensive sensors so I recommend that since you truck is running ok, buy one sensor at a time and replace them at the same time.

From what I've read the front one(s) does most of the work, the rear one mainly tells the PCM if Kat gets plugged.
I would change them both if it were mine.

I have a '92 dakota and get horrible gas mileage. I have tried doing all I can to improve this so my next thing is to replace the 02 sensor. How do I know which one to get. It seems that there are two different ones. One with short lead and one with a longer one. I can't see where it connects to, so I don't know which one to get. If I pull the old one out to check, can I drive to the parts store without it in to get a new one? I'm affraid if I pull the old one out , I won't be able to put it back in. Or should I get the universal one and splice the wires together? Please help!!

They are prety easy to change, just grab a 7/8" wrench. First unplug it then take it out. I changed mine last night and it only took like 15 miniutes to do.

They wern't Delco just whatever brand my parts house carries, I'll have to look at the boxes. I paid $64.00 and $69.00, maybe I got hosed on that one. I changed them late last night so I havn't driven it yet but I'm driving about 120 miles down to my Mom & Dads place tonight so I think that should give the computer enough time to readjust everything.

Hey o2 guy,

I ordered a set for my ram through my military parts house and it came out to be the same number for the front and back. The only dif. in the two was the plug. One has an offset guide bar. I just shaved it and installed it. Of course I did have to use a couple of wire ties! The leads were alot longer. I think the set I received was the universal set.
They are working great, and I have gotten better gas milage ever since.

I guess ill just get the universal one and use the spliced wires to install into my existing wires. Just thought it would be better to replace all of the wires and not have any potential problems with sensor. Thank you for your response logic

I paid 10 bucks for an OEM 02 sensor :)

If you go to NAPA they should be able to give you the one you need.... They just need pretty much the motor size.

they come with pig tails already attached. Just unplug & unscrew then screw in and plug in. No other connections to make.
Let it cool off before you do it though, I did it when the pipe before the cat was still hot and have a real nice blister on my forearrm now. I knew better too.
