Hello, I just brought home my first Dakota! She is a 1987 SE 4X4 3.9l v6 w/101000 miles.
So my question is: what should I expect to start replacing? Any thoughts on what I should take care of first? As far as I know, it is 100% stock. Any comments would be great.

With it having about 100k miles you might have to replace the lifters pretty soon. You'll know it's time when it starts to tapping pretty bad.

Hi there Bill, I also just recently got my first
Dakota, a 1987 3.9L as well with just over
150k on her. She's been running fine up until
recently (blew a radiator hose and covered the
engine in antifreeze, and has been running
rough ever since) but other then that (and not
liking the cold) I haven't had many complaints.
I get about 20mpg (well since the hose
incident I've been getting really poor mileage,
anyone know why?)
Tony: what are the lifters? How can I tell if they
are tapping? How much do they cost to
replace?

Lifters are located just inside the valve covers. If they go bad you will notice a very different ticking sound.

Thanks for the replies. My valve covers are leaking so I'll be replacing them this week. I've been told this is a common thing with the 3.9l. I'm also going to replace all the hoses.
Here is another question for you: Since I don't like relying on using the temp and oil lights, I bought a triple guage. I've got an idea where the water temp hooks up, but where does the oil line hook up?

Congrats on your 87 Dak, I too have one, but I'm building a low rider, The only major problem that I have ran into with my dak is that the Fuel pump which is located inside the gas tank, went bad. This was due inpart to the truck sitting for a long time. My dad and I took the gas tank off and replaced it. It was a pretty simple job, we got it done in a saturday. (quite a bonding session) Other than that, routine maintence should be fine. The premagnum 3.9 is a strong motor and only needs routine maintence. Not much in the way of power, only puts out 128 horses but there are things that you can do to increase that. Good luck with your truck, and ask around for help if things go wrong.

If your talking about the oil pressure sending unit it is behind the air intake in the passenger side. I believe it is on top of the intake manifold.

I have a 1987 dak 3.9 auto 2-wheel drive. I was told by someone that my fuelfilter is under the truck on the frame in front of my fuel tank, and then others say that it is in the gas tank. Does this vary from where the truck was built, I just got my truck in a trade not to long ago, and I believe that my truck was one of the slightly more under powered Cali. trucks. Also if anyone has a good detailed diagram of the engine, that would be great, tahnks a lot your guy!!

Hoses,radiator,waterpump,fan clutch is all i have replaced on my 88 dakota in the last 2 years.

if its a 87 the fuel pump is located under the alternator and the fuel filter the same area,if not check the frame
the oil line go next to the dist
the lifters are under the intake,to remove them you have to remove the valve covers,rocker arms and shifts and push rods,along with intake.
for give my motor a bath in anti-freeze-the dist cap may have moisture inside,WD-40 inside of cap, wipe

I have that distictive tapping sound from my 96 3.9 as well. Didn't know what it was before, but now I have a sneeking suspicion. How much work is it (time wise and complexity) to replace these lifters? Also, what is a good ballpark cost? I would really like to get it fixed (preferably done by me, but I am relunctant to get in over my head) but need some more info.
