In normal acceleration, at about 50 mph, I get a vibration I can feel through the steering wheel. It stops at about 55 mph. 3.9 Dakota SLT Club cab. Anyone else run into this?

It could be a tie rod end going bad or an idler pulley. If you jack the front of your truck up and push back and forth on each side of your tires and there is play there then that might be your problem.

check all u-joints. have tires and wheels balanced. front and maybe rear end alignment. this will help. b4 you replace the u-joints, drive to the point where it starts vibrating. put the tranny in neutral, if it stops, the problems is the u-joint (d-shaft stops turning, thus stopping vibes when in N). if it continues, it is either wheel balance prob., or the alignment. hope this helps you.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the front brakes. After some new pads and turned rotors, I was back in business.

Man am I glad I seen this site ! I have a 2000 dak
v6 auto I`ve had my truck to the dealers about 6 times since I owned this truck. As soon as the truck gets to 46mph its start to vibrate. I`ve been told by the dealers that the truck was designed that way. If thats the case what a #%&@ up design. I`ve even had them change the driveshaft and it still does the same thing. Its been driving me crazy ! I do like this truck its just a shame that it has this problem. When I bought the truck I don`t remember it having this problem until it had about 1500miles on it. If I had noticed this when I test drove this truck I would`nt have bought it.Thanks I feel better now !

Another thing that can cause this problem is a warped tire. I had one of my tires break a belt, and the truck would vibrate when I went above 50 mph. Nothing I could do but replace the tire. By the way, the damage was from hitting a curb pretty hard.

designed that way?!?!

what the !@#%?

if it was designed that way then they surely would let you test drive more of their daks to prove the flaw in the design....
if it was designed that way i think there would be a lot of p!ssed off dak owners!

Intense Dak 39, I forgot to mention one dealer told me because I had 350lbs of sand in my truck that was why the truck vibrated. If I wasn`t a truck driver for 25 years I might have went along with that. What the *$@!^% is the sence buying a pickup if you can`t put a little weight in it ? My wifes neon handles weight better than pickup.
What the #$@&* !

Just got done talking to my friend where I by my tires and was telling him about the vibration in my truck. He called a friend at a dodge dealer and the guy told him that the problem is with the overdrive in the tranny. He said that in about 2 weeks that dodge is sending them to learn what they can do to fix this problem because they final agree there is a problem. I was told to call back in about a month and hopefully they will have an answer to our problem.I will let everybody know as soon as I find out.

My 89 Dakota with the 3.9 has a vibration that is constant. Can feel it at startup and it really becomes annoying at 1000rpm's and up. Makes no difference whether it's in gear or not. Have tuned, looked for vacumn leaks and even replaced the harmonic balancer. The problem persists. Any ideas guys?

I agree with the above. There are more areas nobody has touched on. Start with easy stuff like stated above:

1. Check tires. Look for hi/low tread. Some tires wear-out unevenly. Feel the tread and see if from one pattern to the next, if there is uneveness. Also check from inside to outside. Tire manufacturers call this cupping. You can even see lighter and darker areas where dust is rubbed off on the blacktop and the worn areas stay dusted because the low spots are in poor contact with the street. -\_/-\_/-\_/-\_/-\_/- Get it?

2. balance tires

3. Check rims for bent or flattened conditions. Almost never exists but maybe you've been hitting curbs. Number one is the most probable cause of vibration. New tires are indicated. New rides seem to come with the cheepest. Damn dealers.
The techs at the tire shop can easily do the above for you free when you pay for a spin and balance.

4. If the suspension is tight and wheels/tires are good, get a Tachometer. Drive and note the rpm range where you feel vibration on the road. Park and put the tranny in nuetral and see if you get the vibration in that rpm range. If yes then install new Harmonic damper. If no, I suspect the Drive shaft is not balanced, keep reading:

If you get the vibes at a certin speed or range of speed and not throughout all road speeds this almost certainly indicates a problem separate from the suspension/wheels/tires. Don't just run out and get a new harmonic damper. Get an experienced mechanic to verify it is bad first. And when they fail, more engine damage can result because of the off balance crank rattling your motor apart. On the Drive shaft deal, check ujoint, lubrication, and all nuts bolts and hardware are fastened tightly. Get back on the road and using first gear first, get up to the rpms where you get the vibes and see if you can still feel them. Then try it in second and third gears.

What you're doing is getting a consistant engine speed and seeing if the shaft is out of balance by spinning it at different rotational speeds while keeping the motor speed (or rpms) steady. A shop can spin and balance your drive shaft or you can shop around for a nice performance drive shaft and paint it to match your truck and be cool.

You can do this man, I know you can.
Good luck

I have to say that turbo has the right idea. More likely than not it is something very simple. My wifey's yota had a bad vibration. Took it and had the tires balanced and it drove like new. If your truck had more miles on it, that would be a different story. If you don't have a clue, start simple and cheap and go forward from there.
