Ok this might sound like a dumb question, but please just indulge me. I am having the engine replaced in my 1997 Dakota 4x4 3.9, with a 1998 Dakota 3.9, with only 55,000 miles on it. My question is: Can the odometer be reset to match the mileage that is on the replacement engine?

OD reading is for the entire vehicle not the engine alone.

I suggest you not pursue this any further as any OD change except those done by a certified shop for the proper reason's is illegal.

Amy,
I *think* you can have it done if you provide proof of the mileage and everything to the people doing it. Don't quote me on that though.

00dak,
I'm not an expert on these things at all, but I'm figuring the odometer works similarly to a super nintendo game (ya know the games with the cartridge?) or a memory card for some of the newer game systems. I think it is like magnetically stored in the computer chip or something. I'm not sure though, but it seems like that would be the case.

To do what you are asking you would need to buy a new gauge panel, have it installed by a very friendly tech AND you would start at 0 miles showing on the odometer and if you were lucky the tech with the proper equipment could change the computer "set" miles. And later on being the legal person that you are you would have to tell the future buyer that the mileage is incorrect and here in Maryland you would be required to sign a statement that the mileage showing is incorrect and then I'm sure you would have to give them the song and dance about how the orginal gauge panel "quit working", if you know what I mean. I have installed new computers into Dak's and it is required that I note and "set" the mileage..... in my situation the "NO B/S" clause takes effect.

Let me add that the little green numbers CAN NOT BE CHANGED!!!!! on the existing panel...only replacement will change them and they will start at 0 miles OD ( overall distance).

I just noticed that FazDak beat me to the reply last night... Going along the lines of his post, I agree with him. If it's illegal, don't do it. Otherwise it could bring you quite a bit of trouble when you decide to sell the truck.

not quit Danny, the dealer and his trust computer can change them. The numbers are stored in the PCM. The dealer needs to have this ability in case he needs to change out a bad PCM for a good one and that is the only way he can do it.
