Question, is there a bad time to click the over drive on? Or is it safe to click it on anytime. Same question for turning it off.

Overdrive really should only be off when you're maxing out (cuz it slows you down with it on) and when you're on like really hilly roads where it keeps kicking on and off. In town, it prolly wouldn't make a difference since you're traveling at low speeds most of the time, but when you're running at higher speeds you'll get worse gas mileage when it's off (so make sure it's on when you go on long trips). If I left anything out or got the facts a lil wrong feel free to correct me someone...

What IM asking is, say Im cruisning at about 35 and all of a sudden I want to turn over drive of, should I let off the gas to do so or does it not matter. How high does 3rd gear max out to b4 reving to high or damaging anything? Thanks

Whenever I kicked overdrive off, I still had my foot on the gas and I was doing about 70 at the time. It just downshifts and the RPM's go up. Not sure how high the 3rd gear goes before it maxes out, but I was doing 105 mph in 3rd and just entering the redline. Just keep an eye on your tach if you got one. Standard driving shouldn't hurt it at all.

If you want to screw up your transmission go ahead and turn off overdrive while doing 70 and see what happens. you will stop i asure you of that as well as the motor will really not like it at all. its the same thing as downshifting from 4 speed to 3rd in a manual.

I run wth the overdrive off every day for about 5 hours -- at low speeds using it for work ; I have also towed a saturn on a dollie 150 miles at 2000rpm with the OD off- 45mph-- the od shows the tach to be 2000 at 60mph with it on, and 3000rpm at 60mph with it off-- 3.92 rear end -- if you jump out od oD at 70 mph you risk blowing up the engine , driveshaft u joints and rear end-- by sudenly going from 2500rpm at 70mph to almost 4krpm-- your truck--do what you want--

Whoa...I wasn't saying floor it and turn overdrive off. That would prolly be damaging. I said my foot was on the gas at 70 mph and I was meaning that I was giving it gas to hold it steady. The RPM's didn't jump up a whole lot at all. It wasn't like it bucked and threw me back in the seat. It was just like any other time my engine downshifts. I mean, considering the fact that 3rd gear you can hit about 100 mph before your tach goes to around 4800 RPMs (my redline...or somewhere close to that), it shouldn't make your RPMs go up that much when downshifting from OD to 3rd@70 mph.

Yeah. it isn't safe to switch off overdrive unless you don't plan on driving over 45 miles per hour, other wise you are wasting gas by not having it on as well as forcing the engine to work extra hard to do the same speed.

I agree chris. I almost always have it off until about 45 or 50. I would never dream of shuttin it off at 70 miles an hour though. But to answer the question, it kicks on at 30 mph. start with od on, when you hit say, 35, let off the gas and click it off. you can feel the down shift. I wouldn't turn it off at more than 45. As for turning it on, there ain't really a bad time.

you say you wouldn't dream of shuting it off at 70 mph, what do you think happens when your on the highway going 70-80 mph and you start up a hill and the trans shifts down out of OD into 3rd it's the same difference.

OD is 100% correct.

When you floor it and you're already doing 70+, what do you think happens? It just magically goes faster because of more gas? The transmission drops out of OD and into third. Third can handle upwards of 100+, I would suggest going 100+ for long stretches of time but it won't hurt anything at all to shift out of OD doing 70.

maybe they are the ones that are in the fast lane running 45, they had to let their trany slow down so it was safe to shift out of OD hahahahaahaha......................

Okay... I'm not trying to start a fight, cuz I'm not sure what answer is right. I know I was fine when I did it, but I don't know if other trucks act differently. I do however wanna mention to those of you who said overdrive is good up to 45-50 mph, what about getting better max-out speeds? Remember the majority of the people here said that you will get a better max if you turn overdrive off? If what you say is true, then most of us will only max our trucks at about 50 mph and even slower with overdrive on. That's definitely a little untrue though... I hope. If people max out without overdrive, it means most of them are doing approx. 2 times faster than what you say is safe and I haven't heard of anyone blowing their engines from doing that, although I'm sure maybe someone's blown a tire, or something which would be instant death or critical injury. Okay, I'm sorry I'm rambling... I'm a bit tired, but you should understand what I'm saying.
