Although I hate having these problems, it feels good to be back on the board, missed you guys. No need to appologize on long windedness, did you take a good look at my post. LOL.

Don't really have access to anyone close to run diags for me.

MAP sensor was one I was going to replace before, but never did as truck started acting bettewr and didn't get any further. My theory on replacing was that since the truck had been sitting quite a while when I bought it was to just gradually start replacing stuff when I could afford it, so it isn't anything I hadn't planning on doing.

As for black smoke, I remember thinking at one point it seemed to be running rich, as for smoking I don't remember.

When you start it up, as long as you keep reving the engine, it runs. It sounds good, smooth, strong etc., but as soon as you stop reving or just try to hold peddle in one position it immediatly starts to die and will unless you immediatly start reving it again. Very difficult to keep it running long enough to even get it moved in the driveway.

Thanks, Diane

when you start the motor does it start easy or do you have to hold the peddle to the floor?
i,d say the map is the problem, could be hose or wires going to it,the wires can be tested with a volt meter,i don,t remember which wire feeds the pcm or the map or the voltage,i think 5volts,but your manual should tell you how and which wires,

the hose to map should connect to the TB it may have a low vaccuum reading,by hooking the hose to a intake vaccuum source sometimes will cure this

hope this helps,it can be a pain tracking this stuff down

i had a brain cramp, but the egr can cause these problems too.bad gas mileage, poor idle, its on the driverside next to TB bolted to intake,

the transducer may be burnt, its the round black plastic think that has a hose coming in and a hose going to the egr

the egr can be removed and the hole in the intake blocked or leave on and disconnected

Good Friday to you Vern and thanks!

To start it, you have to pump the peddle. Exactly like you have to keep revving to keep it running. As long as your on the down stroke and giving it fuel it runs, as soon as the peddle starts the up stroke, it's starts dieing.

I'm pretty sure I replaced egr valve when I got the truck and started all this trouble shooting, but as far as a transducer??? I will check it all anyway. Replaced so many things and since it's been awhile, can't remember anymore (old age is taking me over, LOL)

All I've done to MAP in past was check the wiring and connections.
You said....

What do you mean by the last part? Sorry, I don't quite follow this. Should I try hooking it in another area on the motor? Where?

Thanks, Diane

by hooking to the intake you,ll have a direct port not feeding thur the TB[this is something we do when a big cam is installed,it helps keep the vaccuum up for the map so it don,t throw a code up]

have you tryed decoding it with the key on,key off,key on, key off,key on and count the flashes this may tell you something

Well, I purchased my Dads white 1988 Dodge Dakota Sport 4x4. I've already but a new rebuilt tranny, Rear diff, and flowmaster Cat Converter, and new Muffler. I've been reading everything on this Forum and pretty much I've ran into most of the issues. The stalling had me going crazy. I felt like "The Man in the Box". About after running for about 5-10 minutes, she would want to stall especially when trying to stop immediately. I replaced everything from the hall-Effect, fuel filter,Map sensor, wires, distributor, EGR, everything. This did make it run better but it still stalled. I took my Haynes Manual out and one thing I did NOT change was the Idle Speed Control (controlled the load). I installed a Tach (my recommendation for everyone) and notice the RPMS were way down. I tried to get the RPMS up to 2500-2600RPMs with the Electronic connector unhooked from the old ISC, it still stalled with the RPMS up after following the Haynes instructions. I went and got a NEW ISC installed it and VOILA...it's working. The Tach shows the RPMS never dropping and it doesn't stalls. I hope this is the fix and I wanted to share it with others on the forum. Thanks for everyones' input on this forum...yall rock.
