Subject: IAT Relocation - Gas Mileage
IP: Logged

Message:
Okay after tuning up my truck and finally taking the rubber piece off to get more air flow. I am maybe going to do this iat relocation or just buy another one and put it in the cold air intake. Here is the main question to the people that have done this mod. I have a 2000 dakota 3.9.

Did this decrease or increase your mpg?
and,
By doing this mod has it triped your check engine light?

Thanks

I did this mod about 3 weeks ago and returned it back to the factory location. It did not trip and codes, but my idle was very different. It would not come back down to base idle as fast as it did with the IAT at factory location. I would jerk between gears cause the idle was up so high. It was tolerable though. It felt as if I did not have to get on the gas as much to accelerate with relocation. i had relocated for about 2 weeks and the truck seemed to start running bad. I've had a constant worry about my warranty ever since i got the truck (2002 rc sport 3.9) and have just recently returned all back to stock. Took the 3923's out, put the TPS sensor back to stock setting, took the homebrew intake off (pvc is bad!!) If i do anything at all it will be an intense intake, and flowmaster single out exhuast, MAYBE a chip! I've heard time and time again, the V6's just weren't meant for high performance. Unless your gonna shell out tons of money for serious mods, what you bolt on just is not worth the return. It will not hurt to try the relocation, see how you like it. You may have more mods than what i did. If you have no mods, i would not do it! I've tried almost all the mods on speedtweaks.com and they helped slightly but one thing leads to another! Hope this helps! These guys on this board are smarter than me so don't just take my word for it, check what others have to say too.

dickie,
I don't want to argue with anyone, but i did the relocation on my 97 and i liked the way it turned out. It defintily helped with the aceleration, and on hot days you didnt get the loss of power after being on the highway for a while. I drive an hour and a half to work everyday and i have about the same amount of power when i first start it up as i do when i'm at work. I think what your gonna find out is, most mods work better with more mods. Its a neverending cycle that us folks that like to mess with our trucks get in to. The relocation is to make your truck think its runing cooler than it is. You want to keep your motor cool. Thats the reason for the 180 stat. If you do one mod, and dont see a difference, just keep it. When you start getting more and more mods and they all start working togeather you'll notice a big differance. I do agree with ccman on 2 things thou, these V6's arnt gonna push a bunch of performance unless you spend big bucks. But i enjoy making people wonder what is under the hood when you can run with and beat some of these "so called fast" cars out there. Its all in fun. And another thing, PVC is BAD!! If you do a home brew use the ABS pipe. PVC will acually make a harmful gas when it gets really hot! If your looking for more mods just check the boards. A V8 TB is a good Low cost mod that has been getting alot of good review! So good luck with the truck, and from me personaly, I'd relocate the sensor. If you have problems with your idle and shifting like ccman stated, then just move it back, its not liek its a bunch of money to do it in the first place. Good luck! :)

as far as gas mileage, strange as it may seem, my gas mileage seemed better. I kept track of it and was getting 100 mpg on the first quarter tank after filling. I did not have to accelerate nearly as hard, maybe that was saving me gas, don't know really. But for sure if you like to put your foot into it and you do the IAT relocate and you like it and it helps, your gonna for sure use more gas! maker sure you solder your wires if you lengthen them, sometimes you have to. Don't do a half ass job and just splice them and put electrical tape over them. do it right, i know you will. Have fun and enjoy.

David,
Check out speedtweaks.net, go to tips and tricks, then look for the IAT Relocation. Read about it there. You but the IAT in your intake tube.

I need a new exhaust system for my 1999 Dakota Sport 4x4. I do not know much about systems, but I know that I want a high performance system that will make my truck a bit louder. Do you have any suggestions?

Jeff, This isnt really a exhaust post, but If you search around you'll find MANY MANY posts on this question. Its all about what you wanna go with. I have a Vortex system and i love it. It was cheap, sounds great, and have me alittle high end. Your gonna find that most people go with Flowmaster series 50. Just look around. Good luck!!
