I am STILL trying to track down a scraping/rattling sound that I get under acceleration/load between 2000 and 3200 rpm. I have a 3.9 X-cab 4x4 5spd. This happens in all gears but only on acceleration, not if I am sitting still revving the engine. It sounds like a light to medium metallic scraping/rattling. Could this be my flywheel? Could the engine be torquing itself loose on a worn/loose motor mount? (With the scraping being the fan in the shroud or belt?) I was originally thinking it was a stone or loose bolt somewhere that only rattled at a certain harmonic pitch. But I can't seem to track anything down. Any and all ideas/suggestions are welcome!!

Check your body mounts.
I had a Ford that would squeal during deceleration, turned out to be worn mounts.

Couple things to check.

Start out by trying to locate where the sound is actually coming from. Does the sound come from under the vehicle? Near the transmission. From the engine compartment?

Check the heat shields on the headers. If they happen to work loose a little bit you will hear this type of sound.

Check your dipsticks. Take them out and plug the holes with something. Then try it. I had a very very similar problem and it turned out I had two serious issues. One a heat shield was loose on the exaust (heat shield rattle and exaust leak) and the second issue was there was a bolt that my dipstick was slapping against inside the transmission.

Dude, i had the same problem with mine and it was my brakes. they were completely shot. Exactly like you were sayin, that metallic scraping sound, sometimes it sounded like a palm frond was caught under the truck. It ended up costing me a little under a grand to get an entire new brake system, not definetly your problem, but its possible

Is the noise louder or more pronounced when the engine is cold? Does it make the noise in park or neutral as well as underway? If yes to both of these questions, what you may have is a noisy oil pump relief valve. No problem, just annoying until fully warmed up. One way to correct it may be to change to a synthetic oil. Don't know if this will help you or not....
