Well I finally have the lowdown on my truck. I think my worst nightmare is coming true. My truck has been in the shop since yesterday, and my husband got the call today on the diagnosis. We have a cylinder or two that have gone bad, with very low compression. They are going to remove the engine and do a complete top job on it. Basically it is in really bad shape. I hope that once we get it back it will be all better. After the day I am having I need a beer. Doesn't look like I will be driving for a while. Dang it.
Would it be cheaper to find a another engine to put in it?

As I recall....You had high mileage?....
I would be thinking about going with a
rebuilt unit....(thinking to self "wonder
what kinda shape the rest of the engine will
be in")....Will the rebuilt be comparable to the
work that had already been done....(thinking to self "cost me alot of money so far for misdiag.
time/labor/parts")....Is the tech/shop capable.....From the reading of your post I'd say that you maybe are going in the wrong direction no doubt caused by "the sales pitch from H&LL".....If they have started and you can't stop things and have them do a "warranty" backed install of a remanufactured unit...MAKE D@MN SURE THAT THEY DO IT RIGHT.....Tell them to write a book on spec verses actual measurements on ALL THE INTERNALS"..... Any questions have your husband e-mail me off line.....Wish you luck. Keep posting

I am taking this truck to a different Mechanic than I did before. This shops owner and lead mechanic both have newer dodges. The lead mechanic used to work for Naples Dodge. I was talking to the owner and he showed me the printout from the computer he hooked it up to (there was an error code list that covered a full page) The onboard computer only showed a 12. He said that he was going to take out the engine and check it out before he did any repairs, to see what the problem really is. I talked to him about putting in a reman. engine and he said it would be best to wait to get the full diagnosis. He seemed impressed that I wasn't afraid to get my hands greasy. He said he would call me if he found out anything new, and would call before he did any major work. The last guy I took it to, just took me for a ride, I guess we just live and learn, to bad I had to learn the hard way. But then again, I seem to always have to learn that way.

Amy,
I dont knwo what a rebuild job costs, but if your interested there is a 2000 3.9 motor on ebay for sale? I'm pretty sure it was just rebiult but he decided to go with a 5.9L. Maybe after your mechanics looks over it and gives you a estimated price you should look into getting one? I know my motor has around 140000 on it, and the only reason i havent looked into getting a new motor is because me and me dad can rebuild this one if it fails. So good luck with the whole motor problems. I know its pretty stressful and exspensive when things go wrong. Best of luck!!

Good Afternoon all,

I got the final diagnosis on my Dakota. The engine is totally dead. It would cost me $4000 to fix everything that was wrong with it. My last mechanic took me for $500, and was as you all said, throwing parts at it. My advice to you is always get a second opinion and use a trustworthy mechanic. I am getting a complete engine replacement. The bright side is not my truck will only have 55,000 miles on it instead ot 109,000.
Thanks for all your help, and advice, you all have been great.
