I have a '99 3.9 auto 2wd dakota. My question is, do you have to push the brake down to shift into gear? I know it sounds like a stupid question that deserves a stupid answer, but I've only driven 2 dakotas. An R/T, and mine. I had to use the brake for the R/T, but not mine. Anyone know why?

In my 03 Dakota you have to press the break before putting it in gear. This is something you should do anyhow, unless you like the idea of the truck lurching forward when you pop it into gear. ;)

My old 93 concorde you didn't need to use the break to shift out of park. Just turn it on, put the gas on the floor and gentely pull into gear, I had a love/hate relationship with that car.

what you're askin about is a brake interlock. GM put them in back in the mid 90's. My 99 CC V6 doesn't have one either, so maybe Dodge started in '00? It was put in due to people shifting into drive w/o foot on brake and making vehicle lurch into things.

thanks cwzywbt. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one.

runamonk, not to be a smarta**, but if I have a v6. It idles around 6 or 7 hundred, so lurking forward ain't exactly a problem. But yeah I almost always push the brake first. Habit I guess.

It's a problem if your parked really close to someone. :)

Again, it's just a good habit to get into anyhow.

Feel free to be a smartass, I won't cry. I promise. haha :)
