92 V6, 2wd, 112K, 3sp auto w/OD. Had problem with no overdrive and loss of cruise control. 2 tranny shops wanted to replace tranny, Dodge dealership said no way could the Vehicle Speed Sensor cause this as the check engine light never came on.

Well I just spent the best 50 bucks on a new VSS, installed in five minutes, changed the tranny filter/fluid to AFT+3. Now my tranny shifts like a champ, OD is back, and cruise control works.

I'd like to thank all those that gave advice...

This may seem like a stupid question, but what is a Vehicle Speed Sensor and what does it do? What does it look like? I have never heard of it. My 92 is having problems with OD not coming on and not pulling second gear when it is supposed to. If it is only $50, I will probably buy one. Please Respond. Thanks.

I'm no mechanic, but from what I know the VSS is the sensor that provides speed input to the speed control system, which among other things tells the tranny when to shift and tells the cruise control what speed it is going.

The sensor itself is avail most auto parts stores, I got mine at AutoZone with a one day wait. The sensor is very easy to put in, it is external on the transfer case rear of the tranny. Took me and my 11yr old kid all of 10 minutes. I just used an adjustable wrench. It is very small part, perhaps 3inch by 2inch. Who knows, might be a cheap fix as they go out quite often.

Also make sure you don't use Dexron in your tranny. Don't let a garage or autoparts counter man tell you different. Good luck.

I totally agree, Dexron and ATF are different. That is why everyone should read the manual and know the facts because the people behind the counter usually don't know JACK!!!
