In my case, it was the neutral safety switch. I pulled the transmission pan, and looked at the swtich and the linkages inside when the truck was in park/rev/neutral. For the truck to start, the neutral safety switch is grounded. That means that the center pin on the switch makes contact with a metal contact on the linkage inside the transmission. Mine doesn't always line up correctly. Sometimes it won't line up in park, but it will in neutral.

Oh yeah, the neutral safety switch grounds the starter relay.

So I found the wire going to the starter relay, spliced a wire into it and ran it into the cab. (If I remember correctly, it is a yellow wire with a black stripe, and I found it in the huge bundle of wires attached to the firewall under the hood.) Then I connected that wire to a push button switch, and the other end of the wire to a piece of metal under the dashboard. So, if the truck won't start because the neutral safety circuit isn't grounded, I can just hit the button and ground it manually. The truck starts.

Remember, that you cannot ground that circuit permenently or else cruise control won't work, and overdrive will not engage. (I made this mistake.)

Good luck!

I rigged mine up exactly like you did and it works great.

I should mention that the wire is Brown with a yellow tracer, and if you pop your fuse block, it is easy to find running right into one of the posts on the starter relay. I just used a test light to figure out which was which.

I just used a scotch-lock to tap into the wire and located it inside the fuse block so it isn't exposed to anything.

Thanks for the guidence.

Update-

Well, apparently the neutral safty switch was not the problem in my case after-all.

I noticed that in Park or Neutral, when I try to start the truck, I get the Solonoid to click - every time.

In Drive or Reverse, if I turn the key, I get no click. I.E., the neutral safty switch is working fine.

Furthermore, If I turn the Key in Drive, no click -- and then hit the McGuyver button, I also get a solonoid click. So, the McGuyver button is also working properly and grounding the starter relay as it should, but that is not solving the problem.

I'm convinced now that it is infact the starter that is bad. I'm going to buy a new one, and attempt to install it myself. By the time I buy all the crap I need, including some tools that I don't have like a long extension and a wobble, I'm sure I'll nearly equal the cost of having a mechanic do it.

One question, however. Is the solenoid part of the starter assembly or is the solenoid seperate from the starter? I want a new solenoid as long as I'm going to be greasy and frustrated.
