I have a 98 3.9 Sport 4x4. Problems with it include: Exhaust leak, slight spark knock at low RPM. (auto trans). Now, I am sure it just needs a regular tune up to elimate the spark knock. It has 146000 miles on it and has ran like a top for me. It has towed everything I have asked it to from boats to snowmobiles to people out of snow and mud and driven through it's own share of mud. Here is my concern- the exhaust leak. used to just tick when it was cold but now it is full blown all of the time. Has anyone else experienced this on a 98? Does it need new manifolds and if so, how much??

Are you sure it's an exaust leak? I have a 97 Dakota Sport 4x4, and it had a ticking noise as well. After replacing the belts (thought it was the fan belt), turns out it was my timing chain. Glad I got that extended warranty...

If the exhaust leak is getting worse it means something is getting looser. I used to have this problem with my JBA headers where they meet the Y-pipe at both ends. There are two nuts on either flange. You should be able to touch them easily enough with your hand. It's a bit of a pain to tighten them, gonna need about 2 feet of extensions from underneath.

i have a 96 dakota. after i bought it i took it to a mechanic to have them look at it, and it was making a ticking sound. the guy who looked at it also had the same truck, and said it was the timing chain. he said it is a common thing on these trucks for the timing chain to make noises. he said his has been making the same sound for 70,000 miles and hasnt gotten worse. he kinda said it may get worse, may not.
