Subject: Exhaust sounds horrible...

I have a 97 dak sport 3.9 auto with about 70k miles on it. I have the stock exhaust and it sounds like crap. When i get up in the 3500-5000 rpm range, it just sounds like there is something rattling in the muffler. its like a loud, abnoxious, shhhhhhhhhhh sound. It really makes me angry. Even though i am thinking about buying a new exhaust system completely, i just would like to know what the problem is and if anyone else has the same one. Thanks guys

your catylatic converter may be shot. on my truck it did the same thing and it was because the cat was shot. cut it off and the problem was gone.

It's the cat. Go to any decent muffler place and have them weld a hi-flo cat in.

It is the cat for sure!
Mine is doing the same thing. I had a dnyomax exhaust installed about 2 or 3 months ago and the it was hissing, I thought there was a leak in the exhaust so I took it back to the guy who installed it.
said the cat was shot! I just got my inspection sticker, so I'm going to take it out and gut the sides, (make my own damn high flow cat!)

All answers seem correct, but Dak95 has given you the best advice. Have a high flow cat welded in there. Forget the Mopar replacement - it's the same junk that's in there already. If you have the money, now's a great time to consider a better muffler, too. Many on this site have installed Flowmaster and others with great applaus. I chose Gibson single with the 3" polished stainless tip, and I love it.
Good luck!

I just had a Hi flow cat added to my exhaust with a flowmaster 40 series dual. Great improvemnet and very noticable. Yeah it is a little loud but the sound is great low rumble. With the large tires I run I am no longer kicking back and forth in and out of OD. I am not turning OD off as much anymore. I can climb hills that I used to always take OD off. Prepetrate and Thrash have heard it and they thought it was the best they have heard.

A "decent muffler shop" won't touch that cat till it has 100,000 mi. on it or is 8 years old. federal law you know. dealer is responsible till then.

Get an after market universal cat for about $85. You got to get it replaced soon, you'll get burn't valves, and other problems you don't want, not to mention bad gas mileage.

Hey, I have no cat. Gutted it, and my truck makes that noise also, at about 4000 RPM's. Its like some body is hitting my Cat body with a ratchet, when I get up to that RPM. Thats Exactly what it sounds like, if you can picture that. What is it? A heat sheild?

I get the same sound....like someone is hitting the exhaust system with ratchet but it's not while accelerating. It happens while decelerating, especially if I put it in second gear while going down a steep hill. Not a major problem but it is a little annoying. I suppose it doesn't help that the whole exhaust system has over 130,000 miles and the muffler is so rusted from salty roads that it is coming apart at the seam.

For those of you with the extra sound effects (chatter, ratchet wrench tapping), it could be that when your cat broke up inside, small pieces found their way into your muffler, and that could be what's banging around. Sounds silly, but it happened to me, and it's a bear to get out those pieces!

Im glad I read this board. I have the original cat on there and recently put a new cat-back on. Havent noticed any problems with it but looks like I should get a new cat put in. My milage isnt too incredibly high (113K) for a 96, but I wouldnt gut the cat like u can in the older V6s. I think around 95-96 and foward you start running into computer problems (emitions) and performance problems (backpressure) when u mess with the flow. The only complaint I have right now is that the new muffler and dual out pipes cause too much cab noise and drown out my stereo, o well time to look into adding a small subwoofer behind the seat!

I have all new exhaust. I had a 40 series flowmaster dualed out the side put on over a year ago. After the lift was installed a few weeks ago I had a Hi flow Cat installed with all new pipes from the manifold aluminized to the rear with stainless steel tips. Great mod but it is loud. A great music drowns it out but with MT's on you can not carry on a conversation on the phone, speaker works good for this.

Yes I have a V-6. When I am out wheelin I get questioned on it now. "Uh, you have a V-6 emblem on your truck but I never heard a 6'er sound that good".

Hope this helps!

Chris

Where would I get a Hi-flow cat and how much would just that cost (not including pipes)? Also, what flowmaster or gibson muffler would sound a little more mellow than forexfour's? And what would it cost me?

Muffler shop should work it for you. I know mine is not specific for a Dodge. It ran $280.00 for the whole install and the cat.

Justin,

Not the whole thing. The $280.00 was only for new pipes from the manifold to the Flowmaster with a new Hi flow cat.

I had the flowmaster installed over a year ago and it was $350 or $400 for what I had done. It would prolly be about $600 for the whole job.

YOUR RIGHT! IT did blow up. I am gonna go get a Ford! Thanks for the recommendation!

And the hill was really not that steep we did trick photography to make it look like it was a hill, I just could not make it over the little bump in the trail. Then when I finished rolling back down the hill I got laughed out of the park. This is a normal wheelin day for me.

Which Ford should I get?

Any help would be appriciated!!!
