Get a Haynes manual with the list of trouble codes or you may be able to find them on the internet somewhere. With the truck off, turn the key on (not start) then off, on, off, on, then wait. The check engine light will flash 2 digit codes. Flashes, slight pause more flashes, that's the code. When it gives you code 55 it's done. I had a truck with a bad EGR valve that idled bad. It could be a number of things. Check the codes first.

Sounds to me like you could use a good throttle body cleaning. Alot of times with age and high mileage you'll get some carbon buildup in the throttle body and when it gets bad enough it will start affecting your idle.

My service engine light keeps coming on and stays lit. I took it to my mechanic and he gave it a tune up. He replaced all plugs and also the cap. The light still is on and it still runs like crap. Any ideas?

Do this.
Turn you key 2 clicks forward then back to the OFF postion, then 2 click forward again, then off again, then 2 clicks forward yet again. Leave it at this position. Wait for the check engine light to turn off. It should then come back on and will blink in a series. Example:
1 blink then 2blinks (this is telling you that dignostics has started.
4 blinks then 3 blinks (this is a code 43)
5 blinks then 5 blinks (this is telling you that the diagnostic check is complete.
This will all happen within 10 seconds or so, so you have to keep your eyes peeled on it.
it should look like this
1-2-4-3-5-5 (if you had a 43 code)
Let me know what code you get.

Well thank you for all your help guys but I can't seem to fix this infernal glitch in my truck. When I check for codes I get nothing just 12 then 55 and as far as I know 12 is battery disconnected recently. I had my injectors serviced this week at dodge. I have cleaned TB like new.I just don't know what else to do.
If anybody has any more ideas let me know the info is much appreciated.

have you removed and cleaner your idle air control motor? it is on the back of your throttle valve. my 93 started dying out after start and didnt want to idle. i cleaned that and havent had a problem since. it gets carbon built up on it and doesnt react like it is supposed to.

Check your TPS throttle posistion sensor with a
volt meter, center wire and ground should be .35
to .75 key on engine not running open and close
the throttle a few times and be sure it raises
and returns to the same low volts.
drivers side of TB

96 does not have the EGR valve

gently clean your IAC Idle Air Control with some
carb cleaner but do not pull push or twist on the
plunger, also put a little oil on the o ring to
asure a good seal
Back of TB

Start with those things first.
