I recently purchased an '87 Dakota 3.9L automatic(170,000). Per some previous threads I picked up on I have changed the coil (OEM) and the plugs (Autolite 3923's, gapped @ .035) and am having a problem. Once warm and attempting to shift into 3rd gear the engine will not respond to throttle, sputters, loses power, and will sometimes die while rolling. Trying to give it gas while this is going on will sometimes result in backfiring. Any incline I try to climb aggravates this problem, usually resulting in the engine dying. I tried taking the negative battery cable loose, hoping the Spark Control Computer would reset, no luck. Can I get some advice?

That's a lot of miles...

Sounds like an emissions issue.
Do all of the emissions mainetence and see what happens.

The truck was intended to be a light duty, mainly work commuter-type vehicle that I don't have a lot of money in. The PCV Valve is clear. I live in a state without emissions inspections, e.g. no smog pump on the truck when I got it. The Cat converter doesn't appear to be blocked. There is a fair-sized crease in the crossover pipe that I intend to do something about. The thing runs as well as can be expected until it warms up and tries to shift into high gear or is in high and hits a load, such as a hill.
