I had my 98 3.9 cc in the garage to have the driverside valvecover leak fixed. The machanic replaced both valve cover gaskets. I drove home about 25 minutes away and when I pull in the driveway, smoke was going everywhere. I pulled in the driveway, shut the truck off and looked under the hood. Oil was everywhere. Both valve covers were leaking. I checked the dip stick and there was only about 1/8 of an inch showing on the tip of the stick. I pured in another quart of oil and you could here it running out on the ground. I called the machanic and was going to send a tow truck to pick up my truck. I started the truck with oil on the add safe mark and turned it arround in the drive way for the towe truck. Two indicater lights appeared on the dash. A (P)and (!) appeared. Does anyone know what this stands for? I hope my engine is not ruined.

1- I hope you have a 2nd vehicle to drive
2- Does your truck have the oil pressure gauge??? Did you check it???
3- I wouldn't have added any oil--- sounds like you already ran it too low-- expect the shop that did the work to cover the new block.

P - ?? Pressure?
! - means OH SHI!!!!

Sorry--

Sorry to hear all about that. The warning light sounds like "oil pressure is low". Before panicking, examine the oil filter for the correct part and if it is installed tight enough. Then look at front and rear main shaft seals. then look for a/some leak(s) in the oil pan or the filler plug is loose or missing. I don't know what else could drain your oil faster than these problems. "Hearing it run out" suggests a big leak and the biggest leak would be from the filter if it was loose or the wrong part. Smaller and slower drip would come from seals and gaskets.

If you had any oil on the stick at all your fine. I have seen engines run for 5 minutes with no oil without any immediate problems, obviously it's not good for longevity though. If it wasn't knocking or ticking real bad when you turned it around i wouldn;t worry to much. I recommend you find a new mechanic. I've always thought it was impossible to replace 2 valve cover gaskets and have them both leak oil. Seepage is one thing but jeez! If you do need engine work i wouldn't let that guy do it!

Just an update to my original post. Appartently the gaskets that the mechanic put on my top pan were falty. They just curled up underneath the top pan. The machanic put news ones on and shampooed the engine. When I picked the truck up she would not start. Keeped stalling. It now stumbles every time I start it. I wonder if the water he used to wash off the shampoo got moisture into some ingition componet? It still stinks of oil in the cab when the heater is on. I guess it will be awhile before it wears off.

Ya, vehicles can run for a short time without any oil and do only minor damage, but of course thats not reccomended or anything, but it can happen

I knew this guy a while back, his son just put a brand new motor in an old car, and went to drive it, only problem was that he forgot to put oil in, he drove for about 10 minutes before it blew.

He probably got water in the distuter cap, thats why it stalls. It might clear up on its own or you can take the cap off and let it dry out.

BTW gaskets usually don't just curl up by themselves. He wasn't paying attention when he put them on and they got pushed in.

As for your dash warning light - sounds an awful lot like the parking brake light to me.

Thanks for everyones posts. The new gaskests are working fine. Now, I just got to get the tranny fixed today. No O/D. I love this truck, but lately there is just too much going wrong with it, costing too much $$$$. I would not mind it I was driving it hard, but I treat it like a baby!
