Subject: Lifter Noise?
IP: Logged

Message:
I've got a '00 3.9L 5-spd, and at idle (warm or cold) & any time I'm cruising or accelerating part-throttle anwhere under 2000rpm or so, I hear what sounds like lifter noise. It's audible even with the windows rolled up and the heater/AC on, & only disappears over 2k, like when I'm on the highway. The oil pressure seems fine. The gauge reads just under 40psi at warm idle, & reads about 60-65 psi at cold idle. Warmed up, it also reads about that high at anything over 1000rpm, both accelerating and cruising. The truck's only got 30,000 miles on it, but I don't have receipts or maintenance history from the previous owner(s), so I have no idea how the truck's been treated except for the last 5,000 miles. BTW, I don't think it's clutch chatter; with the hood up, it's easy to tell the noise is coming from the engine. Is this common with the 3.9 V6 (like it is with the Bucket-O-Bolts-sounding I-6 in the Jeeps), or should I have the engine checked out?

not positive but i believe that i have heard a lot about the timing belts ticking and causing the exact same problem even with that low of miles, i believe the cure was to install a double timing chain and tensioner.

Yeah, probably the timing chain. Is your Dak still under warranty? If so, take it to the dealer to have it replaced or adjusted. I'm not sure of the '00 has a tension adjuster or not. If it doesn't, you will need a new timing chain.

Well, I've tried to narrow down where the sound is coming from, and it seems like it's down inside the motor, but I'm not sure. I mean I haven't done anything like the ear-to-screwdriver-to-engine test yet to really pinpoint it.

I don't know if Dodge had that 7/70k warranty back in '00, but because it was early production (November '99), the truck's just past all the 3/36k factory warranties. I do have a pretty good aftermarket warranty that I'm sure will cover a timing chain replacement, but do you guys think a dealership is trustworthy for something like that? I've had nothing but bad experiences with service at dealerships.

Also, is that double (double roller?) timing chain a "problem solver" type of OE replacement? Even if it's aftermarket, I think I'd still go with the double to prevent the possibility of having this problem again, unless it'd void my warranty.

Most fuel injectors make a really loud ticking noise, thats normal. A leaking exhaust manifold gasket will make that noise but usually only under load.
