I was up late last night thinking. All the problems associated with a 318 swap. I have a 1990 V6. Trucks in good condition and I was thinking about trying to gather info about building up my 239 V6. What numbers do you think are possible if it was bored out ???over. And had a good cam, intake manifold, newer performance heads, and all the rest of the headers, intake, exhaust, etc. I am sick of running around with 125hp. But Im not sure I want to totally rip apart my front end with a 318. Thanks.

i was thinking that too. Buying a bare 239 block, and building it to what I want... but do they make performance heads for this engine?

We'd most likely have to get the heads ported and polished.

I dunno... just what i've been thinking about lately...

Go with the 318, so many more options. If you can find a one at a salvage yard and get the computer and wiring harness, you can do it. I like the V6 and you can do a lot of stuff for it, but the V8 can be so much more rewarding. Good luck which ever way you go, let us know.

Deep has a point but I would say go a step farther and do away with the TB injection all the way. All you need is an intake, carb and a MP electronic conversion kit. I have done this before and it was so much more powerfull than the TB injection.

Sup Joe,

It's been a long time, and since the last time I've spoken to you about home brews for our premagnums, I've acquired a lot of new toys. The main and most rewarding toy to me is my new 92 magnum v6 block, complete with wiring harness, and pcm. I have to agree with fast dak about getting a v8 on one hand, and on the other I have to disagree. Of coarse a v8 is going to be more rewarding due to larger displacement, but if you are a hardheaded determined mopar guy like me, you will find a way to squeeze ponies out of a v6. Premagnum motors are just to hard to do now a days cuz the parts are all discontinued. I know you pain, I'm in your boat with an 87 at that. SO here is what I'm doing, I contacted KRC, and Huges brothers and the individual that own's strokerkits.com, and I'm going to build a s/c, stroked out N2O magnum v6. It's going to take time and money, but what the hell, I'm already driving it with a premag, so I have all of the time in the world. It all boils down to what you want to do and how much are you willing to spend Joe. Either way best of luck to you, and thanx for the tips in the past

dude, good to hear from ya. Wow, going for a Mag huh. Hows the wiring gonna go? Thats the only thing scaring me about my swap to a Mag.
I will not be doing any of it for a while tho. Just dropped $2K into my tranny. Blew it a week ago. But its back on the road with a TransGo Shift kit and a tranny cooler. It works nice too. Well, keep in touch buddy.
Good Luck.

Hey there, see ya got a 1990. Sweet mine too. Are you speaken of Mopar perf. parts? Or other parts like edelbrock, crane, etc.? I would love to find a mild cam. Also a new high flow intake manifold and TB. Do you have any advice on good perf parts for our engines? Thanks

mopar performance parts. as for intake manifolds i would take the stock one to a machine shop have them opend up for a bigger breath of air and while your down there have them port mach the heads. pistons and connecting rods you can order from any one just order six 318 pistons there the same thing TB im not a master at any thing so i would go to a junk yard and find a 318 or 360 that had/has a TBI setup and try to get it to fit thats all i can tell you for now

Hey man, thanks for the info. Ill definitly look into it. I have this dak as my daily driver. It goes everywhere I go...
So I need something with good street manners, but also has a good kick to it. What type of HP/TQ gains are we looking at with this cam/lifter combo? Thanks

Hey Joe,

To answer your question about wiring, I'm not sure how it is going to go. I have the entire engine wiring harness to swap out. Out with the premag, and in with the Magnum. I can tell you this much, I'm completly rewiring the truck, including the instrument cluster, in order to accommodate the obd1 computer. In a sense the only thing on my truck that will be premagnum is the tranny. I'll keep you posted as the events unfold.

it dosent have any # posted but as far as calculating the gains it looks to be about 30rwh but the cam pakge is about 84 dollars without shipping for some people thats not to much to pay for power but as far as looking for one from compcams or some one eles i dont think they give an option for v6 mopars or 3.9l any way. i really dont know what to tell you untill i get my new motor(rebuilt)and have the cam lifters valve springs pushrods all replaced if they give me good #s ill be sure to post them then have the motor installed and give yall the rwhp and torque iff your intrsted in a rebuit motor there about 840 dollars for a xtra long block which includes every thing but intake manifolds andvalve covers and oil pan i belive or if you plan on building it up your self like i am going to you can get the long block assembly for around 740 dollars

Here's all the info that I've gotten so far.

What I'd like to do to my truck:

Port and Polish Heads and Intake Manifold - I want to try some radical alterations to the intake manifold, so I need to find a spare or a donation somewhere. I've already got the heads I'm going to be experimenting on. Might deck the heads a few thousandths to build a bit of compression.

Crane Cams ductile iron 1.6 ratio shaft mount rocker arms and pushrods (www.cranecams.com) for 6.6% more valve lift

1.88 in,1.60 ex,valve[340-360] manley makes a swirl design valve. Something seems wrong here, I can find listings for the exhaust but not the intake valve. I'll have to check the specs.

Hydraulic roller lifters - Crane cams makes them for the 318 so they should drop-in but I'm confused as to whether or not I need a special camshaft.

Camshaft - definitely need to do this, but I'll have to be careful, especially if I mill the cylinder heads and put the 1.6 ratio rocker arms in. Don't want a valve to impact a piston.

V8 TBI- only if I can find a complete one with good looking injectors for cheap.

Edelbrock TES Headers #6851 - drop-in replacements for exhaust manifolds.

Electronic Ignition controller - haven't settled on brand yet, still looking.

JET Performance Stage II Module #98901S - seems a bit expensive to me.

Personally I already have installed :

K&N E-1290 - drop-in replacement for circular air filter, works just as well as cone filter set-up if you build cold-air tube out of 3" PVC and remove the heat-riser attachment on the air cleaner for a wider entrance. I also recommend widening the opening where the accordion tude used to connect and building an air-damn of some kind to ensure you're getting only cold air.

Aftermarket exhaust - I have a glass-pak cause I like the smooth mellow tone at idle, but it sure does roar when I press the pedal.

Removed Catalytic Converter, AIR pump and piping - BIG improvment, plus it cleaned up the engine compartment. I'm definitely eyeing the bracket where the air pump was for something later on.

In the process of making:
Custom hinged removable aluminum locking tonneau cover. I wanted a one-piece hard cover and I don't want to remove my tool-box. So I'll just make my own. Helps with mileage.

Would it be easier and cheaper to get a V8 and work from there? Probably. As challenging? No, not really. Besides with the exception of a few bad moments caused by accessories (alternator, starter, battery), this engine has never let me down and I've certainly abused the living daylights out of it. So I kind of have a certain amount of compassion towards it.

Wow man. Thanks for the info. Alot of good stuff there. Im writting it all down for future reference. I have done most of the mods you have done. K&N, jacobs ignition, removed cat and emmissions stuff, edelbrock headers, dual flowmaster exhaust, transgo performer kit.
They have helped alot. But I still wnat more. So i am watching you to see how it all works out. Im in college and have lil finds to put on my truck. Keep us posted ok. Tell me a bit about your truck...
Later.
