Why did you buy (or lease) your Dakota?

I bought mine cause I wanted "ram's horns" on my hood. I didn't want a Ford, and S-10s are way too "cute", and I can't afford a Ram.

And cause every idiot has a customized S-10.

My 2001 Dakota RC Sport Plus V6 5 Speed

I got my truck because I thought that it was a little bigger than the S-10 and the Ranger. It was easy to find a Dak with a V6 in it (I couldn't find any V6's in S10 or Rangers excepts 4X4 models). I just liked the looks of the Dak.

I wanted a sport sedan for its refinement and handling, something like a Maxima, but was replacing a Ranger and didn't want to lose the versatility a truck offered, either. I found the perfect compromise!

Nissan- was at 3000 rpms at 70mph and no power
Chevy- good power looks like a pussei car not reliable for the people nextdoor
Ford- had one, no power in 3.0 and too much $ for the 4.0
mazda=ford
isuzu=chevy
DODGE- 1900 rpm at 70 mph. O.K. low end torque. looks good for a truck, performs like a truck, works like a truck, must be a damm good truck
Toyota-had one didn't like it. Sitting in the drive seat and your feet are out in front of you. Hell on long trips

I know I aint in the V6 club but here is why I bought, I was looking for an american "made" truck with four wheel drive, a V8(sorry guys), auto tranny, and as long as it wasnt a mini truck I was happy. My folks told me it was a good buy and I knew absolutely nothing about dakotas or any trucks so I guess I just got lucky. Plus I liked the boxy looks of my GenII.

Had a Ford Ranger 3.0L before my Dakota. Wanted to step up in size and get a more comfortable ride while still having the full size bed. Dakota was right in the middle of a full size truck and in the middle of everything else.

Got the V6 though, because of money. We got the truck with one hell of a deal too. 1999 Dakota 3.9L CC SLT 3.55g fully loaded. The sticker was almost 27,000.00 and with the help of my father we got them down to 20,000.00. It came with hail damage also so thats one reason we could get it so cheap. It cost me in the long run 450.00 to get all the pot holes out of the truck after I bought it too. Talk about a steal. Of course at the time it was 6% financing so that bit the cake.

But shes still an awesome ride but just too much to fix her up in my eyes. Not to mention that the Gas gauge is starting to float so SOMETHING is going inside that gas tank. Probably the meter that regulates the gauge inside the cab. In any case she was a work of art for the 3 years I've owned her.

Within the next two years, i plan to buy another truck. I'm keeping my dakota, but i'll probably buy a Ford F150.. but only because my cousin works for ford and he gets a GREAT discount on new trucks... I love dakotas, but I can't afford a new one!

1995 Red RC 2.5L had 28K miles. Bought it fresh out of the Military based purely on looks and gas econony. Really my first vehicle if you don't count the Yamaha FZR600 that got stolen from me off Ft. Bragg!!!! Traded in with 105K on the clock changed the tires once, changed the oil/filter every 3K, Oh yeah the AC compressor went south @ 97K. Other then that utterly reliable

2nd DAKOTA
Fresh off the lot 2000 Intense Blue CC 3.9L Auto. Spent a ton of money modifying this one. Gibson Cat-back, Aiwa head unit, Us Acoustics Amp, MTX Thunderform, F&B 48mm TB, Airaid intake, SS Grill inserts, Windows tinted, MSD plug wires, 180 T-stat, 3923's etc. Two weeks ago had to give it to the soon to be X wife. She is currently looking for a buyer :(

3rd DAKOTA
2000 Flame Red RC 3.9L 5-Speed. Got a real good price on this one had only 13K miles on it. The five speed does wonders for the 3.9l, Feels like a whole different engine. Snagged the Airair intake and the F&B TB. Also have had a Vortex Cherry Bomb muffler cut in, added 3923, 180 T-stat, IAT Adjuster, Clear corners, and of course a DML sticker, The SS grill inserts are on their way, And hope to add a Hurst Short shifter next.

4th DAKOTA

After i finish school R/T 5.7 (hopefully 5-speed)

akaproph, You wanted a WHAT? A FRICKIN' YOTA? Apparently the military causes people to lose their minds!

I bought mine about 1 month ago, it's 93' 3.9 black RC with an automatic. I had always been checking out the lot that my dad worked at in hopes of finding a car or truck he would co-sign on (he worked at a chevy lot and drove an S-10, this was no easy task!). One day I was visiting my dad to meet him for lunch in my 88 Grand Am (I hated this car!) when a salesman I knew came running up to me saying he had got a couple cars on trade in I may be interested in, One was a Buick (nothing wrong with leather and power options) and the other was a 93' Dakota. I saw the Dakota in the distance and took off running to check it out (I love a clean black ride!). After a couple test drives (I came back to drive it around daily after I had first saw it.) I knew I had to have it. The price was right at 3900 and it only had 88,000 on the clock with a 3.9 magnum! I knew I had a hundred bucks to my name so I put down my deposit the day after I saw it. It took a little time to come up with the $500 down my dad wanted me to put down (in order to get his signature) but it was all worth it. As it turns out, the night before I bought it someone broke into it and stole the CD player, luckily I had one laying around and was given $250 for the one that was stolen by the lot's insurance company! A week after I had it some dumb @$$ pulled out in front of me and it got crunched in the front driver side corner, so right now I've been battling the insurance company for 3 weeks trying to get his to pay up because it was his fault! Either way I love it, it smokes new eclipses, roasts my friend's 89' Celica GTS, and laid my buddy's 4.0 litre Ranger to rest. So far the Dak is 3-0 and is a blast to drive. Even though it's wrecked, I still love it more and more every day, eventually it will return to it's original luster. I'm counting the days.

Well... I was getting a new job after being unemployed for the summer, and my '96 Cavalier (with 60000 miles), was burning oil at a rate that required me to add a quart every other gas fillup.

Then one day I see a '96 Chevy S-10 4x4 V6 5-speed at a local dealer. Mind you, this is the _same_ dealer that sold me the Cavalier. Wasn't too pleased with that car, no sir, screwed me bigtime. Never did get the Cruise Control I paid for, and the sunroof they added caused the cieling liner to fall.

Anyhow... where was I...

Oh, yes, Kenya. So there we are in Kenya, up to our necks in filth whil... er... eh? What do you mean thats not what I was telling you?

Darn good story, that...

Oh, the truck.

Ok, well, grabbed my father and hauled him over. It's always a bad idea to car-shop alone, the newness of the vehical has this habit of overriding the common sense portion of the brain.

Besides, I needed him to cosign.

Took said S-10, which had 42000 miles on it and was 15 grand, for a test drive. It started and ran good, looked clean. Got inside. Darn, this is small. I could reach across the cab without trying, and couldn't see the hood! Eh? No good. Took for a drive, it was OK. Nothing spectacular, never could find 3rd gear...

Ok, yeah, screw that. Guys didn't want to deal and wanted to sell me a 4-cyl extended cab if I wanted new. Yeah, well, too bad. Not what I wanted.

So, on the way home after resigning myself to the oil-burner for another year, we passed a Dodge Dealership. My father wanted to go check out used Dakotas, so we pulled in. Immediatly the saleswoman directs us from their modest used Dakota list to the new Dakotas. Test drove one, no sticks though. Love at first sit. She hadn't even handed me the keys and I already had the stupid, "Whoa I love this thing" grin.

Took it for a spin, it handled better than the Cavalier and I could actually see the hood! It was wider than the S10.

They tracked down a truck almost like what I wanted (except not extended cab and without cruise and tilt), in Ohio. We put money down on it after they gave me payoff on the Cavalier (Yay!).

Next day, I stopped by and picked up a brand new (400 mile) 2000 Dakota Sport, Forest Green, Wider-tires (Supposedly 4x4 tires on a 4x2), sliding rear window, 5-speed, V-6. Climbed in and everything was right where it was comfertable for me, it was like it was built around me.

Now it's rolled over 30000 miles, I've added a Spray-On bedliner, Soft Tonnue, New stereo, white gauges, bugshield, and mudflaps. I love the truck as much as I did when I got it. I've had _NO_ Mechanical problems at all, and have taken rather long trips comfertably! A first!

Problems that it's going to have checked Monday...

Drivers side front alloy wheel appears to be loosing the alloy coating... eh? What the?

Found a no-paint spot on the tailgate.

Why? Looks, price, features. I was driving a GMC S-15 Jimmy before this and would have bought a Sonoma except that I wanted a 2wd truck, club cab, V-6 and a manual transmission. The Dodge dealer is the only one in the area that had that combo -- Chevy/Ford/GMC dealers all had 4-bangers with an automatic. Foreign was not an option (although technically since Dodge is now part of Daimler.... ;-)

But I have to admit that I've secretly liked the Dakotas every since they got the mini-Ram look.
