I have performed a forum search on coils and I have come to the conclusion that for my particular set up an MSD ignition system may not be neccessary. But what about swapping out my OEM coil for something better? And what is this I have picked up about swapping the rotor cap or something?

I am going in for a tune up this week and I am having a lot of stuff done to my truck at that time. Since I will be in the shop anyway I figured I would install whatever I need at this time. Here is what I have already:

98' 3.9 4X4
5 1/2" lift
33x10.50 Xterrains
V8 TB
Ram Air intake
Spin-Tech exhaust (turn down, no pipe)
Relocated IAT
3.92 Gears
180 degree T-stat

That's about it, is there something else I should be considering since an after market ignition seems to be a lot of $$ for not much bang? Is an after market coil worth the money?

an aftermarket coil .
an aftermarket coil can offer a little better performance in the way your monster stays lit. alot of these coils well maintain a better spark underload , usally with more power and amperage. a more powerful and hotter spark well aid the ignition process
as for a horse power gain i really dont think there is any.but their ability to maintain a good hot spark under load and in high rpm situations shouldnt go over looked

For a stock ignition, the Dakota's is fairly good. A coil may not show any improvement but may hold the spark hotter under heavey load. I changed to an MSD coil and felt no change, just felt better about doing it. Oh you will need an adaptor for 97 or above engines. Jegs or Summit have them. Good luck

I did the same as Deep Purple, but with an Accel super coil. Same results. I was thinking of improving my ignition system (when I have the funds) to Accel 300+ ignition system. Its a plug and play.

Thanks guys. Now what am I supposed to look for when replacing the cap and rotor? Is there a particular brand that works best?

Most people have used Borg-Warner with brass contacts. I read some disappointments with Accel. NAPA was also recommended. I have a mix of NAPA cap and BW rotor. The BW cap I tried was the wrong cap in the right box so I just went to NAPA and asked for a brass contact cap for a 99 3.9L V6. They didn't list one for '01. Go figure! Same cap. LOL
