Subject: 4.10s Installed

Message:

First of all, if it wasn't for this board, I wouldn't have known what to do to wake up my 6ixer.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I just had my 4.10s hooked up and I love the results. Now I just need to calm my a*s down so I can save on the gas. I never thought my V6 could perform the way it does now. I've driven R/Ts before and I've always envied the power but now all that is over. All I know is that I need to give my truck a "get-well" card because this thing is SICK!!

If I had only known this mod would make this big a difference I wouldn't have wasted my money and time (to fabricate the thing to fit) on a K&N FIPK and on my headers.

Thanks again to everyone who posts (and replies)!

FYI, here are my current mods on my '00 CC:
Fastman 46mm TB
K&N FIPK
Flowmaster 50 DF
JBA Headers
Pulley

congrats man. I was wondering how is that fastman TB and the pulley? I ordered the pulley 2 days ago and the TB is next.

Thanks!

I am probably the only one on this board that is happier with the Fastman. I used to have the F&B but I sold it and got the Fastman because I couldn't get the thing to fit with my FIPK. I am pretty sure there was a way to get it to fit but I couldn't figure it out. Anyways, the Fastman is great and the service was even better. The F&B was my first ever mod and was happy with it. I think the only difference between the two is powerband, I felt the power everywhere. Don't get me wrong, the Fastman is good too but not quite as smooth as the F&B. Wouldn't trade the Fastman for anything, even if I could get it to fit with the FIPK.

As far as the pulley, excellent upgrade for around fifty bucks. Definite must have. You'll be happy with the results.

Once again, I hope you enjoy your gears.

Hey Cal Dak, another upgrade you should think about after the pulley/TB are spark plug wires. I am running the MSDs with the Borg & Warner cap/rotor and 3923s. I forgot to mention I actually did these upgrades before the TB, kinda like a mini tune-up at 15k. There aren't any power gains but the engine runs waaay smoother.

What RPM's are you running at at 60MPH with the 4.10's??? And did you have to get the kit where you need something else besides just the gears to make them work? I forget what it was, but I remember that if you went any higher than 3.9's you needed something else too? Let me know this is the next mod I am doing and I am deciding between the 3.91's and the 4.10's.

Hey outcold,
4.10's are gears. 4.10 is a pretty short gear that allows you to get rolling quicker, but takes away from the top end.

In other words, if you're doing 60mph @ 2000rpm's with stock gears, you'd be turning higher rpm's (around 2600 or so) with 4.10 gears. I'm not sure what the stock gear ratio is (maybe around 3.55 with a standard tranny) but the higher the number on the ratio, the quicker it will start off, but will always take away from the top end speed. I know of a few people that drag race and use as big of a gear as 5.38, but you can't hardly drive it on the street. Sounds like the engine's about to blow up and only going 50mph!

Check out this site. I think our v6 auto's 4th gear is .69. You can see the effect of any gear at any speed, it's helped me.

No your speedo would not be affected, on our dakotas changing the rearend gear does not have anything to do with the speedometer.

Yes, changing gears affects your speed and odometer. Putting in 4.10's is effectively the same as putting on a smaller diameter tire. In your case the mileage will pile on and the speedo will read faster than your real speed. Oh and your mileage will get killed as will your maximum speed.

If you have warranty left I suggest you get the speedo/odo corrected or it will indicate expired before it actually is.

I had to do this when I put 31's on with 3.55's but my problem was the opposite of yours. It's done with the DRBIII by changing the "pinion ratio". Cost me $45.00 for the hookup and 20 seconds of work. ;<) Gotta love dealerships when they know they have you by the coconuts.

Yes, you will have to get the "pinion ratio" changed with a DRBIII Scantool. What you did is the same as putting on smaller diameter tires which raises the effective final drive ratio.

If you have any warranty left you had better do it or it will show as being miled out before it actually is. Also, the mileage will read higher than it actually is.

I had to do the same thing when from 215/75R15 to 31x10.5/15, though my problem was the opposite of yours and the dealer said the warranty would be void if I didn't get it corrected. Cost me $40.00 or so. In my case 75 actual MPH showed as 60MPH on the speedo.

Dave,
You are STUPID. Don't open your mouth, when you have no idea what you are talking about. On newer Dakotas speedo works off of the abs ring.
Changing gears DOES NOT EFFECT IT!

Next time just keep your mouth shut. Don't waste anyone elses time with your drivel.

You are wrong! go to your dodge dealer and ask to speak to the shop steward. He will than tell you that our dakota's get their speedo pick up from the wheel sensors NOT the transmission so the speedo will always read the same no matter what size gear you go. And by the way did you know that he can also flash your computer for non-stock tire sizes? I should know I've had it done 2 times for NO charge. So go ahead and swap those gears your speedo will never know.

Darryl

P.S. I'm refering to my '99 but I'm sure the're all the same.

Speaking of speedos, on GEN II's, there is a fuse that you can pull that will disable the speedo.. only drawback is that none of your gauges will work, no odometer, no tach, no gas gauge.

couple questions, one how much does it cost to have the gears changed out? and I assume mine being a 4x4 I would have to change the front end somewhere as well (big problems if not I would guess) could use an off the line boost, would like to go to the 3.92's

Wow KNOWITALL,

What an ignorant dick you are. Are you sure you don't belong in an S-10 group? You really sound like a Chevy guy and not a Dodge guy. If you do own a Dakota (a big if) it's our loss.

I know grade 5 was the hardest 10 years of your life but you really should try to be nice to strangers.

If your speedometer pick up is in the tail shaft of your tranny like it is on my 94 Dak switching gears WILL make your speedometer read wrong. I am running the next tire size up from stock on my Dak and it reads 2 mph faster than the stock tire size. My GPS unit proves this also.

I'm thinking that Gen II's speedo pickup is in a different place than Gen III's (97-up). I've got a 94 and changing tires sizes on mine affects my speedo also.

I observed the tach at 70mph @ 2200-2300 rpms. And 80mph @ around 2400-2500 rpms. My tires are 255-55R18s riding on the stock height.
