Our '99 Dodge Dakota 3/9 L engine is only getting 6-7 mpg in the city and 10 on the highway. What's wrong with it?

A bad O2 sensor or bad Catalytic Converter or both.
Take it to a good mechanic and have it checked.

I get 18 mpg for combo and 22 for highway.

I have heard from tons of places that a stronger ignition system is the best for mpg's.Though since I bought my 2000 dak v6 reg cab,I only get better milage after each mod.I currently get 17-18 in the city and about 21 mpg on the freeways. And I haven't installed an ignition(yet).I am floored about making these numbers because the windows sticker said 16 city 18 high way.so since my truck is 3 years older and making better mpg's than when new,I have no complaints.
For those w/bad mileage.check fuel delivery and intake,compression etc.I can't imagine a 3.9 even 4X4 getting less than 15

whitedakota2 haas it right,I also get 18/22 WITH NO MODS, so get to a good mechanic with excellent drivability diagnostic skills, and make sure he is both Chrysler AND ASE certified and his cert is current. just a thought, Do you have any young kids in your immediate area that just got a new car, they might be siphoning from your tank. A truck with a six getting that bad of milage must smell like a refinery going down the road because there is no way it can fully burn that much gas over that short of a period. Start it up, let it warm up to operating temp, keep it in park or out of gear with the brake on, then have someone blip the throttle a few times while you stand near the exhast outlet, if you smelll gas you have a problem, if you don't smell gas, get a shotgun and hold servailence, then shoot the SOB thats stealing your gas.
