Subject: Rough Idle
IP: Logged

Message:
Just recently (past week) my idle has started to get rough (bounces 75rpm, use to be dead steady). Now last summer/fall is when I did all my mods to it so I'm hoping thats not it. Now within past week the air temp has gotten warm, then turned cold again quickly. Before I tear into this beast this weekend in what will be 35-40 weather, any little tips/thoughts you guys have??

1997 CCS 3.9l Auto

I'm thinking my plugs, wires, cap/rotor should all last longer then 6-9 months on this truck right??
Did oil change about 2 weeks ago?? 10w30
Then these mods last summer/fall......

1. 48mm Throttle Body, Removed Horns
2. Dynomax 17748 w/Dump And new Cat.
3. S Hook Throttle Body Hat Hold Down
4. Asp Crank Pully
5. Brass Cap N Rotor
6. TB Spacer a.k.a. TB Whistler
7. Home Made Cold Air Intake
8. Relocated IAT
9. 180* Thermosat
10. 3923 Sparkplugs (stock gap)
11. Removed Grill Flap

BTW, also this weekend I will be sending off my last truck payment, WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!

What Accessories are running when it does this, if you have the defroster on the AC compressor will cycle on and off this could cause it to rise and fall

Ya, those should definently last longer than that... Before you tear into it, Pick up some fuel injector cleaner, Most times thats what the problem is...

Well, it does it w/o any accessorys on. I tested it on way home last night. Also this morning while scraping the snow off the truck.

However, I dont feel it has lack of power as it left a nice black mark on road last night it traffic.

So clean my IAC, check plugs, wires, pvc. What else??

It could possibly be condensation leading to a small amount of water in the gas... or it could be just because it's cold and the computer is fiddling with the mixture. Someone suggested fuel injector cleaner, and thats a good start, you may also want to try some dry gas in it. :)

Ok, well I wanted to go to FMS injectors, so I will do that rather then injector cleaner.

Will put some dry gas in it, and check/clean IAC.

I have a 1999 Dakota V6, and its idling rough. Now when I start it in the morning its, ice cold out because of the winter temps, but it doesnt idle rough until its actually warmed up. I say that because Ive sat in it as soon as i turn it on in early a.m. and it doesnt idle rough at all until like I said it warms up for about 10 mins. What could it be? computer not picking up that the truck is warmed up and to thin out the fuel? Ive got all new plugs, wires etc. It rides great once i get going, it's just stopped at lights and in park it rumbles rough. Anyways I was just wondering if there was anyone who could help aid a possible fix to this issue, because besides that my truck is clean and rides smoother than ever.

Start by checking for codes.

Then remove TB, Remove IAC from back of TB.
Clean both throughly,(can of carb. an choke cleaner)
Reinstall IAC, Reinstall TB. (use a new gasket)

Go easy when cleaning IAC valve as to not damage the
plunger.

If you don't know what a throttle body is or where
it's located you should have someone else do it.

Beleive it or not, try replacing the thermostat. I know it sounds weird, but I had rough idle issues on my 98' V6 and the Dodge dealer determined it was the afermarket STANT thermostat that I had instsalled a few months earlier.

Easy and cheap enough to try...

When my plenum gasket blew the idle would rise and fall about 200 rpms. Hopefully that isn't your problem. I had part throttle pinging and was losing alot of oil as well. Check all your vacuum lines. Might be a small vacuum leak.

Ok I replaced my IAC with a completely new one and my truck still shakes. My idle is not dropping or going up and down its pretty steady at about 650-700 rpms, but it just seems like somethings not right when im stopped at lights and in park. Does any one know what it is? I took it too an auto lab and they ran diagnostic tests for 7 hours and could not find anything out of the ordinary and they felt the shake I was feeling but had no idea. The shake is just very uncomfotable and doesnt seem normal.(water dances in a water bottle in my cup holder while im at lights or in park). it also just seems not to be running steady when i start in the a.m. and am out side of the truck it sounds like its going, then bogs down slightly, then back up and ive also sat in my car while it was running and it just completely turned off but imediately came back on. Let me know if anyone knows/has a fix, thanks.
