Having problems with my '87 AT. It misses and stalls on acceleration when running warm, especially up hills, about every 5 to 15 miles.

After a few minutes rest, starts with some difficulty but runs on as if nothing ever wrong - even up hill! When cold, starts right up and purrs - then runs a little rough when warm until stalls. I've replaced fuel pump, fuel & air filters, computer, plugs, wires, coil, Helmholtz pickup, distributer cap, rotor and O2 sensor - checked vacuum (replaced two cracked short 3/8" hose pieces) and had cat pressure checked.

Have been told there may be blockage in the gas tank or lines - gas guage just failed this week, right after the standard tranny service. (Had all three UJ's replaced - one original!)

This truck has been great to me for 180,000 miles. Still has original cat (!!) and water pump (!) and was running strong until this problem suddenly appeared.

Any suggestions how to get it running right again? Several local mechanics are mystified. Is there a ghost in my machine?

I have a 1987 3.9L with carb. It was doing the same thing. I tried many of the same things and finally replaced the carb. Since I did replaced most of the same parts you did over a 2 week time frame I am not sure what did it. It seems to be mostly working now, but I have one problem still. Does anybody have a diagram, on how to hook the vacuum lines up to the idle step down solenoid?

According to the owner's manual you are on the right track, I have a similar problem that just developed, I'm in the process of replaces cap, rotor, and plug wires. Already replaced computer and pugs. She starts up, and runs well, but lacks the limmitted pwr she once had. If you don't find a problem within the fuel lines, than the only other thing that I can think of is the carb, or it has a vacuum leak or low compression has been lost. That's what I've read in the manual. I'll post again later once I fix the problem on my truck. The ole girl has 137k on her and is running great over here in Italy for now.

We may be able to help if we has just a little more info on your truck. You know, make, model year, engine size, etc.......
