Subject: Idle skyrockets when in park...

Hey guys,
I just boughht a 98 3.9 4x4 Dak but I am having some idel issues. When I put it in park and it is warmed up, the idle will fluctuate between 600 and 900 and eventually will rev up to 3k rpms for about 4 seconds, then returns back to the fluctuating. I did a search and there seems to be some issues with the fluctuating but does anyonw know what could cause the surge? It will also surge if in park, warmed up, and you just touch the gas. Thanks in advance. Tim

A blown intake belly pan gasket will do that sometimes.

I second the belly pan gasket and check the
tps sensor, along with the idle sensor, mine
used to do that when i first turned the key.

I have the same exact problem but I think I know what it is. I just recently swapped out my stock TB for a 48mm. I've had the same problem ever since I changed it out. I know it can't be the map sensor and the Throttle postion sensor is right and working correctly so it only can be the Idle Air Control Valve. I know when I swapped it out it was dirty as hell. I cleaned it the way it says in the instructions. But I noticed that it was scratched on the seat of it. I don't know for sure if this is causing the problem but it's only $37 at Autozone to replace it. And just to ask what is a belly pan gasket. Are you talking about the gasket between the air hat and the TB? Anyway will let you all know if this fixed the problem tomrrow. Hope the hell it does. Greg

Thanks guys,
I am curious as to which is the belly pan gasket. I am going to check and make sure there is no leaks from the intake and then check the IAC Valve. Thanks for the information. Tim

Well that didn't do it. Waiting for Bernd to give a few answers to fixing this problem. I think it's the pcm telling the IAC valve to rev up for some reason. I'd like to get my PCM flashed and see if that helps. Greg

I told my dealer about that problem several times they said I was stupid. I took it in the 4th time and they fixed it someting about a vacum or pressure switch. They also swear that the headlight switch does not pull out in my hand when there is tech info on that problem. I have 3.9 4x4 50k.

I have a 99 3.9 that will shoot up to 900-1000 rpms for a second when i put it in park, then drop down to 500 and sometimes 400 rps, almost stalling in the process, then levels off a second later at around 700 rpms. Its so frickin irritating. With every other car i've ever driven, the idle speed would not budge when putting it into park.....
