Something funny is going on here...

On a cold start-up, the truck does it's normal 'rev to 1000 then drop back to idle', at this point I hear this sound that is not unlike collapsed lifters rattling. I don't think thats it, but I suppose it could be. I'm going to get an oil change sometime in the next few days, so if it goes away I'll know...

But, I haven't been able to locate where the sound is coming from, since it doesn't do it after it's warmed up. I was wondering if the timing chain is more prone to rattle when cold than not? I'm approaching the 36,000 mile mark, and the engine is running as strong as ever with no marked drop in milage or signs of smoke.

Could it be the oil I'm using? I've run Mobil half-synthetic (I think it's called Synthetic+ or Mobil+ or something, forget) 10w/30 for the last few oil changes with no sign of problems. Heck, the oil tends to be cleaner at or about the 3000 mile mark, so I figured it's doing it's job. But now I have this noise...

Any ideas out there in Dakota land?

it certainly points to cam wear or bad lifter, i would see my trusty Snap on dealer and get a mechanics stethescope and check on top of valve covers when making noise and also fuel injectors, besides its a good tool to have around anyway.

Stethescope... thats a good idea...

You know, after I posted this, it stopped making the noise? I sure hope it's nothing, since thats basically what my bank account says I have in it... bah. I guess it might be time to take it to the dealer...
