Hello everyone. I'm a new owner of a '96 Dakota V6 4wd (as of today)! I'm excited to pick it up because it is a nice clean truck. But a little nervous because it has 150,000 miles on it. The dealer did their normal check-up before putting it up for sale. What that is and whether they really did it is, of course, unknown.

Anyone have advice for something I should check or preventive maintenance? I know I'll do an oil and filter change real soon. I think I may hear a small valve tap or exhaust leak. Either of these possibilities a normal thing to watch for? What about the 4wd system? (All I know about 4wd is what I'm about to read in the Owner's manual).

I guess I should have asked advice about buying a high mileage truck earlier, but it is too late now and I'm just psyched to be driving it.

It also has a nice cap, which I don't think I want. Any tips on how to sell it?

Thanks in advance,
John

John,
I bought my 96 D.Dakota on the 18th. I also heard that slight metalic sound coming from the engine. The mechanic (seller) told me it was "timing chain slap". If you do a search here, you will see many posts on the subject. Most will tell you its normal, unless the noise becomes excessive.
First........buy a good manual.
Second.......search the website and try to learn as much as you can.
Third...... read-up on OBD II codes, if you are not familiar with the subject...see below..

Good luck.....

I only wish mine had 150,000 miles... hehe, An exhaust leak is definently possible, mine has one, I gotta take it up to midas, but I figure I'll just put flowmaster on it and a high flow cat, redo the whole exhaust the right way while im at it... Good luck with your truck

That kind of mileage isn't bad if maintenance was done as recomended. Try to change all fluids, trans, radiator, engine, front and rear diffs and brake fluid. And any filter you can. I kind of like syn products. May even quiet that lifter, if that is what the noise is. Grease all fittings and you should be good to go. Good Luck.
